Case Study: Summer Arts College from Linda Mason

Fast4ward into film is about raising aspirations, enhancing confidence and learning new skills which will in turn provide a structured programme towards a more rewarding summer.

What participants get:

  • To form a production company and learn multiple technical skills of film/TV production
  • A chance to create their own original artwork / film / music with the supportof professional artists
  • Arts Award qualification (Nationally recognised and accredited)
  • A dedicated Connexions PA to help them plan and execute their career progression onwards from Summer Arts College
  • Support with Literacy and Numeracy embedded throughout the programme
  • Trip to London’s South Bank centre
  • Outward bounds activities likely to include kayaking and team-building
  • Celebration event to recognise and reward participation and achievement

The project will be based on the discipline of a professional production company. The process of developing film from an idea to production and life skills - this will be in a safe, creative and positive environment.

The young people will have the opportunity to explore the process of creating film through various activities.

The young people will also be documenting the three week course through film – interviews – video diaries – There will always be a camera available for the young people/staff to film what is happening.

The roles that each young person will be learning about are:

camera operator, sound, using setting up lights, interviewer, interviewee, role of music/lyrics, developing characters/stories, use of storyboards, editing, designing dvd covers …

There will be on display technical terms for the young people to refer to …. (film terms)

Equipment available for the young people:

Sony dcr-dvd106E, Disgo camcorder, Sony PD170, Sony Z5 (x2 when James is there)

One other additional camera (Rory), VC GZ-MS110 SD Digital Camcorder, Voice recorder, Digital cameras

Lights/gels/reflector, Props, Green Screen, Tripods, Mac laptop

Each lunchtime each young person will have the opportunity to do a vlog (5 min slots) – props will be available

All staff working on the Summer Arts College should be positive and encouraging at all times, using a range of questioning to help the young people evaluate what they are learning in an informal way.

Hayley McDermott - Summer Arts College Connexions PA she will have daily contactwith the programme especially being around in the mornings to meet with staff, breakfast with YP and coordinate with activities according to thesession plan. This willallow Hayley the freedom and flexibility to research placements and courses for our young artists when she's not in the programme.
