BASKETBALL : EVENT SPECIFICATION

General:

  • There will be two separate competitions running on the day, one for boys and one for girls.
  • Entries will not be accepted after the closing date.
  • Teachers are at all times responsible for the behaviour and conduct of the participants and supporters.
  • Staff and officials should be treated with respect at all times.
  • Referees and organisers decisions are final and should be accepted at all times.
  • Teachers will be asked to assist throughout the day.

Team Information:

  • Squads shall consist of a maximum of 12 participants.
  • Teams: year 7/8 boys (U13) and year 7/8 girls (U13) and year 9/10 boys (U15) and year 9/10 girls (U15).
  • 5 players on the court at one time, substitutes can be made at any time that the ball is out of play.
  • More than one team can be entered per year group per school. Only the highest place team will receive points for the overall SSG series.

Equipment:

  • Basketballs will be provided.
  • (Size 7 = U16 Boys & U15 Boys. Size 6 = U16 Girls, U14 Boys & U13 Boys. Size 5 = U14 Girls)
  • Balls provided on the day of the event.
  • Participants should wear appropriate sportswear and footwear.

Playing Rules:

  • The game starts with a jump ball at the centre circle and begins when the ball is tapped in by one of the jumpers.
  • Players may be substituted at any time on a dead ball.
  • A basket from the field, from outside the arc counts as 3 points, within the arc counts as 2 points and a basket from the free throw counts as 1 point.
  • After a basket, the opponents will be given the ball to make a throw in from any point behind the baseline.
  • VIOLATIONS – if any violation is committed, the on offending team should take a throw in from the side line. Violations include:

Deliberately kicking the ball or striking it with a fist.

Knocking the ball out of the court.

Dribbling with two hands on the ball at once or letting the ball come to rest then continuing to dribble (Double Dribble).

Running with the ball (travelling).

  • FOULS – a personal foul involves personal contact with an opponent, if this occurs in the act of shooting two free throws are allowed, otherwise it is side-line ball to the opposing team.

Once a player has 5 personal fouls he/she takes no further part in the game.

  • A game shall be 2 halves of 7 minutes each way. Two minute half term intervals. Five player personal fouls per game.
