Lyceum Youth Theatre – Summer on Stage 2015 Director

Lyceum Youth Theatre (LYT), one of the Scotland’s leading Youth Theatre Companies, is proud to be offering young people the opportunity to appear on The Lyceum stage as part of its acclaimed Summer on Stage performance project; which this year runs from 29 June - 18 July.

Concepts are now invited, from directors with a proven track record of working with youth theatre, to direct the following Summer on Stage course:
Two week performance course for 11-13 year olds (6-18 July 2015).

Please apply in writing with the following information:

  • Up-to-date CV
  • A concept for a script or developed performance idea
  • Names and contact details of two referees

All concepts are expected to fulfil the following criteria:

  • The script suggestion must be suitable for the age group
  • The script must be able to accommodate and engage a cast of approx. 30 young people
  • The performance must be no longer than 60 mins
  • The script must be suitable for performance in a proscenium arch theatre
  • As the performance will be part of a double bill it should be able to be staged on a shared set

Please note: The Summer on Stage Director is a temporary post which will run for the duration of the project only. If successful, directors would be expected to attend production meetings and contribute to the creative process from Feb 2015. This would include interviews for other members of the project’s creative team.

The fee for this project will be £1,300.

Summer on Stage 2015 Director

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • To direct a performance for the Lyceum involving up to thirty 11-13 year olds over two weeks.
  • To deliver a rehearsal process that will engage and inspire the maximum number of young people for the maximum time.
  • To work closely with Lyceum Creative Learning to build a creative team
  • To work with designers and Summer on Stage directors in order to fufill your creative vision within the parameters of the project.
  • To work within the Lyceum’s child protection and best practise guidelines.
  • To attend production and progress meetings as required.
  • Work within strict budgets in order to deliver on key financial and participation targets.
  • Be a member of the PVG scheme or willing to join.

Criteria

Essential

  • Experience delivering high quality youth theatre provision with a recognised organisation.
  • Experience of working with large casts.
  • Experience of working with professional designers in professional venues.
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines.
  • Experience of directing work for proscenium arch stages.
  • Passionate about theatre by young people.
  • Committed to delivering excellence in the youth theatre sector.
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or able to show appropriate equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience of child protection policies and best practise.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with a building based theatre company.
  • Experience of mentoring emerging theatre artists.
  • Experience of working with young people from areas of multiple deprivations.
  • Knowledge of the wider Creative Learning and education sectors.
  • Experience of recruiting creative teams.
  • Experience in the evaluation process of creative projects.
