The boys arrived and began their warm up with a nervous feeling in the air, though if you had asked, none of them would have admitted it. The game kicked off and after a nervous few minutes the boys settled and began to play the way we have all been accustomed to watching. Early on in the game Cameron Horner broke down the wing, running side by side with the full back that looked ready to send the ball into touch. Seconds before the defender could strike, Cameron rolled the ball back, took a look into the box, saw Clayton Thomas free on the edge of the area and passed the perfect ball into him. Clayton took a touch to control the ball before having the first shot of the new season. The shot looked goal bound until the AFC Oldham goalkeeper’s quick reaction parried the shot wide. A good start for the boys.

Another Chadderton Park attack came again and the ball found its way to Captain Adam Fisher unmarked in the box, with his cool as ice attitude, he picked his spot and shot. However again the AFC Oldham keeper was quick off the mark and was able to parry the shot again, but this time only as far as Clayton who made sure his second shot went no other place than the back of the net, 0-1.

After the goal some of the nerves seemed to have gone and the boys began another decimating attack on an unsuspecting team. James Ashton won the ball in midfield looking up saw Cameron unmarked out on the wing. The ball was pinged across to Cameron who carried it down the wing, this time waiting for the full back to make his tackle before skipping past him and crossing the ball into the goal area. The cross found the ever present and ever dangerous Sam Carr, whom true to form shot and scored, 0-2.

Not long after the restart, Cameron found himself out on the wing again and in possession of the ball, with no one in front of him and eyes set on the goal he sprinted towards the area. The full back seeing his rival breaking free again came over to make the challenge. But as many have done before and I’m sure many more will do, no sooner had he reached Cameron to make the tackle than he found himself flat on his back hearing the cheers of celebration as Cameron shot home Chaddy Park’s 3rd goal, 0-3.

The next attack again came from the wing, this time Ciaran Collins found himself in possession of the ball and breaking free from his marker. The defender chased Ciaran, but his determination was in vein as Ciaran raced away from him and let loose a thunderbolt shot across the goal and into the top corner, 0-4.

What was to happen next continued for the rest of the first half. AFC Oldham managed to break past the midfield and the striker was allowed to glide past the central defenders due to a break down in communications and shot. Ellis stopped the shot and couldn’t hold onto it. Giving another AFC Oldham striker chance to pick up the rebound before either Ellis or the defence could react and slotted it in the back of the net, 1-4. The goal seemed to build Oldham’s confidence as they laid attack after attack on the Chaddy Park defence who seemed to panic and allowed them through on more than one occasion. But, the safe hands of Ellis kept the shots out. There were two heart stopping moments though as AFC Oldham looked set to score a second had both shots not drifted the wrong side (or right side depending on which way you look at it) of the post to hit the side netting. These attacks seemed to fuel the Chaddy Park midfield as they again pushed forward to find another goal. One of these attacks lead to a handball in the box and Chaddy Park were awarded a penalty, Chaddy Park managers were swamped with shouts of “Can I take it?” from virtually every player on the pitch and Ken elected Clayton to take. He stepped up to the spot and struck a well-aimed penalty that rippled the back of the net and awarded Chaddy Park the goal they had been pushing for, 1-5 at half time.

The second half started where the first had finished and Chaddy Park pushed forward to earn themselves a free kick. Clayton took the kick and chipped it over the wall where it found Cameron unmarked in the box, who took it on the volley only for it to clip the cross bar and go over. More forward pushing from the Chaddy Park midfield and Clayton dribbled his way through the defence before slotting in his hat trick, 1-6.

At 1-6 up Chaddy Park showed no signs of slowing down and Sam Carr whipped in a cross that found the head of Daniel Woodcock to put Chaddy Park further in front, 1-7. Matthew Cunningham, who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes managed to skip past one of AFC’s defenders before passing the ball back to Sam Carr who let loose a bullet shot that brushed past the post and wide. The ball was won again the midfield by Adam Fisher who with his usual calmness took on the oncoming defender before slotting through the perfect ball for Clayton to run on to and slot under the keeper, 1-8. Matt found himself with the ball and determined to put his name on the score sheet, dribbled his way past two players before his shot skimmed across the crossbar and was cleared by the Oldham defence. The goal did eventually come for Matt, who managed to battle his way through the defence and shoot, 1-9. The boys seemed to get stronger by the minute and came close to scoring with attempts from Sam Carr, Daniel Woodcock and Alex Thompson. Throughout the match some great defending came from Thomas Dean, Jordan Davenport, Connor Stansfield, Sam Jackson and James Stott. In midfield, Clayton Thomas, Adam Fisher and later in the second half, Connor Evans helped keep the pressure on our opponents. Likewise the relentless pressure throughout the match from James Ashton, kept the Oldham defence occupied and then came back on to help out in defence. In the dying minutes of the game AFC Oldham desperately tried to force another goal, was well and truly stopped in their tracks by the persistence of the Chaddy goal keeper who is, Ellis.

The final whistle blew and the game finished. The boys and management were happy with the result and the performance, special mention to Sam Carr who caused endless amounts of problems and never allowed the Oldham defence a chance to rest. The standard has been set now boys and we expect this performance EVERY week, great start!
