BACHELOR OF MUSIC: Certification Option (VOCAL EMPHASIS)

NOTE: All Music courses required for the degree must be completed with the grade of “C” or better.

FOOTNOTES

1. Six (6) successful semesters of MUS 098 are required.

2. A minimum of seven (7) semesters of specified study to equal fourteen (14) hours in applied music is required as are periodic jury and proficiency examinations. A half-recital must be given in the final semester of study. Keyboard majors selecting the Vocal Emphasis will take 4 consecutive semesters of Voice for 1 credit hour each semester; MUS 134 may be substituted for the first semester of voice study.

3. Students must pass a Functional Keyboard IV competency exam and are advised into the correct section of Functional Keyboard according to demonstrated ability and achievement.

4. Concurrent with each semester of applied study, students are required to enroll in a major performing ensemble (University Chorale or Concert Choir), involving a student’s applied major. Vocal majors (Vocal Emphasis) must complete no less than two semesters of University Chorale. Any additional semesters of applied study require concurrent participation in a major vocal ensemble. Music Education keyboard majors follow the emphasis requirement of their chosen applied secondary area. They may be allowed to take accompanying classes (MUS 136 and MUS 336) in place of a major ensemble for two semesters.

5. Admission to Teacher Education begins with this course.

6. Must be taken during the semester of the required recital; applied lessons must be taken during this semester.

7. Must be taken 1-2 semesters before student teaching. It is recommended that the student take the Praxis this semester or, at the latest, the Student Teaching semester.

8. Students must pass the Vocal Proficiency Exam in order to pass MUS 274 (Aural Skills IV).

9. These courses require a grade of C or better to continue in the sequence.

COURSE SEQUENCES

All applied lessons require a “C” or better to continue in the sequence.

MUS 170, MUS 173, MUS 270, MUS 273 must be taken in sequence, with a “C” or better to continue in the sequence.

MUS 171, MUS 174, MUS 271, MUS 274 must be taken in sequence, with a “C” or better to continue in the sequence.

MUS 123 must be taken before MUS 301, 302, 303, or 304. MUS 303 must be taken before MUS 304.

MUS 323 must be taken before MUS 423.

MUS 381 must be taken first in the Music History Sequence, and the grade of “C” or better is required to continue in the sequence. MUS 382 & MUS 383 may be taken in any order.

G.P.A. REQUIREMENTS

Overall G.P.A. must be at least 2.45 for admission to teacher education and student teaching.

All major, minor, and professional education courses must be completed with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.45

for admission to student teaching.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION AND STUDENT TEACHING AT

MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY

In order to be admitted to teacher education, students must:

1) Provide Teacher Education Services with scores of test(s) to measure general academic proficiency.

A person shall not be permitted to apply for admission to the Teacher Education program without first providing evidence of meeting the general academic proficiency (GAP) requirement through any one of the following tests: 1

(a) A minimum composite score of 21 on the (ACT); or

(b) Scores established by the KEPSB for the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)Math (173), Reading

(173), and Writing (172); CBT of PPST (computer based test) Math (318), Reading (320), Writing (318); or

(c) Graduate Records Exam (GRE) minimum passing score of 400 in each area (analytical, quantitative and verbal)

and writing assessment as required by the institution; or

(d) SAT - The minimum score of 990 and required writing assessment; or

(e) The state minimum scores on the Communication Skills (646) and General Knowledge (643) portions of

the NTE/PRAXIS (old Core Battery) tests reevaluated and approved by the Kentucky Education

Professional Standards Board (KEPSB). (PLEASE NOTE: This test is no longer given, but if you

have previously taken these two portions of the old core battery, you may use passing scores as

listed above for Admission to Teacher Education.)

2)   Have earned an overall undergraduate GPA of 2.45 on a 4.0 scale at the point of admission. This 2.45 minimum GPA remains a requirement throughout the teacher certification program.

3)   Have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours with a minimum 2.45 GPA to include the following coursework:

(a) ENG 105 with a “B” or better

(b) MAT 117 (or higher level math) with a “C” or better

(c) COM 161 with a “C” or better

(d) MUS 123 with a “C” or better

4)  An interview with major academic advisor or chair (or advisor may opt to write a letter of recommendation in lieu of an interview)

5)  A review of the Professional Code of Ethics for Kentucky School Personnel and a Declaration of Eligibility (pink sheet) signed by the candidate affirming a commitment to upholding the code and acknowledging awareness of information required for state certification

6) Have supplied TES with any other required information

When all the above requirements have been met, the formal application (green sheet) can be submitted, accompanied by all required documentation. This includes GAP scores and a transcript showing all college work to date. Admission will only be granted following a successful review by the Admission to Teacher Education Committee of your college.

1 An official score report for the general academic proficiency exam must be available at the point of formal application.

NOTE: Students who have not been admitted to Teacher Education will be blocked from enrolling in specific upper level courses.

Continuous assessment procedures will be used to document and systematically monitor student progress through the education program in order to determine the degree to which students have internalized and can demonstrate proficiency with the New Teacher Standards. The eligibility portfolio will be assessed during the student teaching semester. Check Points are designed to facilitate student progress through the education program, provide students with information for completion of the portfolio at designated stages and serve as a means for making recommendations for improvement or remediation when needed, to be reviewed at the next check point.
