Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections are an emerging treatment for musculoskeletal injuries. PRP is a method of concentrating growth factors from the patient's blood and then injecting this concentrated blood product directly into an injured area. In this way PRP acts as biologic augmentation to jump-start or enhance healing. This therapy is one of the most exciting new treatments for soft tissue injuries to ligaments, tendons, and muscles. It is increasingly popular because platelet rich plasma appears to help regenerate tissue, which can shorten recover time and possibly obviate surgery. PRP therapy is a quick and straight-forward procedure that can be performed in an office setting.

How is a PRP injection preformed? First a small sample of the patient's own blood is taken and then separated out into plasma and red blood cell portions using a machine called a centrifuge. The plasma portion contains a concentration of platelets up to 8 times that of whole blood; these platelets contain proteins called growth factors that initiate the growth of new tissue and collagen. The platelet rich plasma is then precisely injected into the injured tissue using ultrasound guidance. The PRP therapy accelerates the body's natural healing process leading to a faster and more efficient restoration of the injured tissue to a healthy state.

How should I prepare for a PRP injection? Avoid taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) for five days prior to the injection. These medications include (but are not limited to) Advil, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Naprosyn, Lodine, Meloxicam, Relafen, Nabumetone, Celebrex, and Salsalate.

What should I do after my PRP injection? It is normal to feel very sore for several days after a PRP injection. For the first 48 hours you should rest the area. After the 48 hours, begin light stretching exercises; continue these exercises for the first two weeks after the injection. After two weeks, begin eccentric exercises under the direction of your health care team and/or physical therapist. Please avoid ice and anti-inflammatories during this recovery period.

How much do PRP injections cost? PRP Injections are considered experimental by most insurance companies, so there are out of pocket expenses to the patient. At Desert Spine and Sports Physicians, an additional cost of approximately $500 per injection is paid by the patient to cover the expense associated with the PRP preparation. Insurance will be billed for office visits, associated procedures and other related expenses associated with the underlying diagnosis.
