Plate Tectonics, Volcanoes and Earthquakes PROJECT

You and a group of people (no more than 4 people to a group) are going to get together and create a power point that you will present to class.

These are the project details……

  1. EVERYONE in the group must be part of the information gathering process. We will be watching your group interaction and you will receive individual grades for this.
  2. EVERYONE MUST present a portion of the power point. (rubric forthcoming) You will have a group participation grade AND an individual grade
  3. At least 7 vocabulary words from the list (this is a handout) will need to be included in your power point. These words need to be identified (identified – italics, bold, underlined) in your power point.
  4. Your power point needs to be saved and passed on to the teachers – be that via email, stick/ flash drive…..come and talk to us
  5. Each group will get an area it needs to concentrate on for its power point…more information will come to you in class about the areas
  6. VERY IMPORTANT  YOU NEED TO HAVE A REFERENCE SLIDE/ WORKS SITED THAT WILL BE AT THE END OF THE POWER POINT, YOU NEED TO LET US KNOW WHERE YOU FOUND YOUR INFORMATION
  7. Your power point presentation will consist of the following slides:

  9. What are Plate Tectonics- give a bit of history
  10. Who is Wegener? Why is he important?
  11. Your area – name, where on a map, etc….
  12. What type of boundary is found in your area? - explain the boundary, find an image to include of the boundary type or specifically your area
  13. What is the cause of plate movement for your area? Mantle convection, ridge pass, slab pull? How do we know this?
  14. Which scientists have researched this area? What information have they added or confirmed?
  15. What kind of specialized equipment do the scientists need or use? (add images)
  16. When was the last documented change in your area?
  17. Image of earthquake activity/ volcanoes for your area
  18. Any well-known volcanoes or earthquake activity for this area?
  19. When was the last eruption/ earthquake? Give some information about this incident.
  20. If you have volcanoes in your area, then explain the difference between magma and lava, share what kind of magma your volcano/ volcanoes has/ have, are gases released? Are solid fragments released? Combination of both?
  21. What kind of volcanic landforms are found in your area? (shielded volcanoes, cinder cones, composite volcanoes, or calderas)
  22. If you have earthquakes in your area, then explain the causes of earthquakes. What are p waves? S waves? Surface waves? What are seismographs? (image of seismograph sheet) what is an epicenter? How do we locate epicenters? What is magnitude? How do we measure this? Hazards of earthquakes? After shocks of earthquakes? What is a tsunami?
  23. Any other information your group found that was highly interesting to this project and this area that was new and exciting to you as you did your research.
  24. Exact due dates are going to given to you by your teacher. Each due date is a stepping stone part of the entire project. Keeping up with the smaller assignments with help you succeed with the big project.
