About the seminar
This course is aimed at enabling attorneys to publish articles, letters, case notes and other pieces in the print media and law journals. On the one hand this will make valuable input to and address current issues in practice for your colleagues. On the other, it will empower attorneys to contribute information to the public through the print media, thus promoting access to the law and justice.
Seminar content
  • Choosing a topic;
  • Planning the layout (convey the crux of your message in plain, practical language);
  • Choosing a title;
  • Choosing the correct medium for publication;
  • Publication requirements for mainstream media and journals;
  • Plagiarism, copyright, referecing and fact-checking;
  • Group exercises and practical application of seminar content;
  • Practical exercises will be reviewed and post-seminar feedback will be given on each individual exercise.
The seminar is being repeated this year due to the positive response received from the 2014 pilot seminar.

Presenters
Professor Anton Kok:Deputy Dean, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria
BCom (Law) LLB LLM LLD
An admitted attorney and director of the five-week Practical Legal Training Courses presented on the University of Pretoria campus by LEAD. He is also a member of the Legal Writing Institute. He lectured legal skills to law students for more than ten years. He has presented workshops on effective legal writing to candidate attorneys and on judgment writing to magistrates and judges. He has published in academic journals and legal magazines.
Mapula Thebe: Editor of De Rebus

Mapula is the editor of De Rebus,the SA Attorneys’ Journal,and has been with the Law Society of South Africa since May 2009. She is also a member of the National Press Club and has over 9 years’ experience in the media industry.
