ACTIVITY PLANNING
Great activities make DeMolay great! When it comes right down to it, it is the activities of the Chapter that attract new members and keep members active.
There are many ways to approach the actual process of planning an activity. Here are five steps suggested for effective planning.
Step One: Research the activity
1. Look at Previous Activities
a. From your Chapter
b. Other Chapters
c. School and other organizations
2. Evaluate Success and Failure
a. Avoid making the same mistakes
Step Two: Set New Goals
1. Attendance
2. Publicity
3. Organization
4. Outcomes
5. Overall Goals
Step Three: Create a Task and Time Line
1. List Duties and Delegate
2. Prioritize and Follow up
Step Four: Develop a Budget
1. Determine Cost and Income
2. Present Cost to Chapter
a. Does it fit in the Master Councilor’s Budget?
b. Fit in Chapter members’ personal budgets
Step Five: Follow Through and Evaluate
1. Take Action Every Day
2. Delegate Well
3. Evaluate the Process Often
4. Consider the Consequences of non-action
The Realities of Working in Activity Planning
We are, probably more than ever, influenced by the “microwave mentality” of our technologically controlled world. We buy packaged food, put it in the microwave and in a few minutes enjoy a meal. We aren’t always exposed to the time and detail involved if we had to create that meal without the microwave. Unfortunately, no one has created a microwave that produces dances, car washes, or softball tournaments! It takes more patience than ever, in working with people on the process of activity planning. Our natural tendency is to want to push buttons to make things happen. It is very difficult for some to focus on the details of activity planning. The key, which sometimes seems impossible, is to make the process enjoyable and challenging at an interesting level.
