Planning for a Safer Road System
The current Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2007-2016 is nearing the end of its life. Significant safety gains have been made under the current strategy, but more effort is required to ensure that no one is seriously killed or injured on our roads.
The Road Safety Advisory Council has commenced the development of the new Towards Zero - Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2017-2026 which will provide the strategic direction for road safety in Tasmania for the next ten years.
Towards Zero
The Towards Zero Strategy will be based on the Safe System approach to road safety with a vision for zero fatalities and serious injuries on Tasmanian roads.
A Safe System is a more forgiving road system that reduces the price we pay for human error. In a Safe System, although mistakes and crashes are inevitable; death or serious injuries are not.
People will make mistakes and therefore the whole road system needs to be more forgiving of these errors. The human body can only absorb so much force, so we need to reduce the force of a crash through safer road users, travelling in safer cars, at safer speeds on safer roads.
Getting Involved
Road safety is a shared responsibility for all Tasmanians. Everybody has a role to play in road safety; including road designers, policy makers, vehicle manufacturers, governments and individual road users.
We are asking all Tasmanians to have their say, to support road safety and to help us plan for the next strategy. That is why the Road Safety Advisory Council wants your input into the Towards Zero Strategy.
