COMMON VOCABULARY

Pine Short: Piece of pine that has been cut down to a more manageable size

Plane: To put a piece of wood through a Planer to change its thickness

Joint:To put a piece of wood on the Jointer to get a straight edge, or 90 degree angle

Jointed edge:The edge of a board that has been placed through the jointer and now has a straight edge.

Square:90 degree angle, also a tool used to check angles among other uses

Table Saw:A machine with many uses. Typically used to cut a board into thinner strips. Often times used to make “rip cuts” which go “with the grain” of the wood.Atable sawis a woodworking tool consisting of a circular saw blade, mounted on an arbor, that is driven by an electric motor (either directly, by belt, or by gears). The blade protrudes through the surface of a table, which provides support for the material, usually wood, being cut.

Rip Cut:A cut typically made on the table saw where you are cutting with the grain of the wood. Usually in an attempt to narrow a piece of stock.

With the grain: When cutting a piece of wood the direction of cut follows the grain (lines), typically vertically.

Rip Fence:Fence on the table saw also known as the Table Saw Fence

Table Saw Fence: Fence on the table saw used to maintain a safe straight cut.

Dado: Adadois a slot or trench cut into the surface of a piece of wood. When viewed in cross-section, a dado has three sides. A dado is cut across, or perpendicular to, thegrainand is thus differentiated from agroovewhich is cut with, or parallel to, the grain.

Groove: A slot or trench cut into a member which runs parallel to the grain. A groove is this differentiated from adado, which runs across the grain.

Rabbet:A recess or groove cut into the edge of a piece of wood. When viewed in cross-section, a rabbet is two-sided and open to the edge or end of the surface into which it is cut.

Miter Saw:A power miter saw, also known as achop sawordrop saw, is a power tool used to make a quick, accuratecrosscutin a workpiece at a selected angle.

Laminate:Tomakebyunitingseverallayers. In woodworking, gluing several layers side by side or on top of one another.

Router: a machine with a revolving vertical spindle and cutter for milling out the surface of wood.

Clamp: Aclampis afastening deviceto hold or secure objects tightly together to prevent movement or separation through the application of inwardpressure. Often used to hold wood in place while waiting for glue to dry among other applications.

Sand:Using a sander to remove unwanted marks from wood in preparation for final detailing of projects.

Top Coat:Generic term used to describe the polish used as the final step for completing a project.
