I. Classroom Environment: The effective teacher maintains a classroom environment that enhances student learning.
Element 1: Teaching Enthusiasm: An effective teacher maintains a welcoming and positive classroom environment, by displaying a genuine interest in the students as individuals and tailors encounters toward fostering a positive and caring relationship.
Element 2: Teacher Interaction with Students: An effective teachers’ interactions with students demonstrate genuine caring and respect. Students show respect for teacher as an individual.
Element 3: Instructional Materials and Resources: An effective teacher selects instructional materials and resources which establish a positive environment and engage students mentally. Student contributions enhance displays.

Examples: Yes! This class is a well-oiled machine with all the parts working smoothly together. Students were greeted at the door by the co-teacher. Once inside ______greeted the students warmly and a brief review of weekend was done. Caution: Watch the volume on the microphone (hearing impaired students are connected to that microphone or have aids for amplification). Students are obviously pleased to be in this class; they participate with interest and enthusiasm. Agenda and objectives are on promethean. Blue is hard to read and it was small for those of us in the back but students were aware of procedure and got right down to work.
II. Preparation and Planning: The effective teacher plans for student learning.
Element 1: Content knowledge: An effective teacher displays knowledge of content, content related current research and best practices. Teacher makes interdisciplinary connections.
Element 2: Knowledge of Students: An effective teacher displays an understanding of important student variables and uses this understanding to inform planning (grouping, interventions, activities, etc.)
Element 3: Knowledge of Cognitive Learning Levels: An effective teacher’s lesson planning incorporates activities and instruction that addresses multiple levels of learning.
Element 4: Knowledge of resources: An effective teacher is able to select and access appropriate resources to assist student learning. Technology is used to enhance learning.
Element 5: Lesson development: An effective teacher’s lesson plans are based on district and state curriculum. Instruction relates new information to previous learning. Appropriate assessments are planned.
Examples: Teachers were working with students on questioning strategies using the Café menu and modeled what good readers do when they read and ask questions. Once students were directed to read to self; a small group of students gathered in the back to go over vocabulary. My only concern is with only 10 minutes to read: when do the kids in small group with you get time to read (I overheard you saying you were going to work with them again tomorrow) I saw that all others were reading “Good Fit Books”.
III. Instruction: The effective teacher provides instruction that enhances student achievement.
Element 1: Lesson Clarity: An effective teacher’s lesson presentation is clear, logical, and based on district and state curriculum. Multiple techniques relate new information to previous teaching and accommodate student needs.
Element 2: Engagement: An effective teacher monitors learning using a variety of strategies and adapts instruction based on student response to engage students in meaningful learning.
Element 3: Questioning Strategies: An effective teacher questioning strategies are varied, equitable and allow for appropriate response time. All students are expected to participate and demonstrate learning.
Element 4: Instructional Methods: An effective teacher implements a variety of methods to differentiate instruction. Technology is consistently integrated.
Element 5: Student-Directed: An effective teacher’s instruction supports student-initiated learning and goal setting.
Examples: Engagement: This was what the lesson was all about. The teachers modeled questions good readers ask and then provided them with stems to jump start their thinking about their own questions and students came up with some great responses. There were a lot of questions being asked of students and students responded. All were engaged.
IV. Assessment: The effective teacher uses assessment to provide feedback to students, design future instruction, and monitor progress toward curriculum goals.
Element 1: Use and Interpretation of Assessment: An effective teacher uses performance and product assessments to plan for groups and individuals and to evaluate student progress. An effective teacher uses assessment data to guide instruction.
Element 2: Design of Assessment: An effective teacher uses assessment design is congruent with district, state and/or national standardized tests.
Element 3: Communication of Assessment: An effective teacher uses assessment criteria and standards to clearly communicate to students in a timely manner and in a variety of ways (rubrics, exemplars, etc.).
Element 4: Student Growth and Assessment: An effective teacher collects data and uses it to drive instruction by modifying instructional decisions. Evidence from assessments show positive student growth in the target areas.
Examples: Students are seated according to visual and auditory needs, but overall the groups are mixed ability levels. Running records are kept by the teachers to track goals and progress. Best practices very evident.
V. Communication and Professional Responsibilities: The effective teacher demonstrates positive communication skills and maintains professional and personal responsibilities.
Element 1: Relationships: An effective teacher relationships with students, colleagues and/or parents are characterize with support and cooperation.
