Course Description

The READING FUNDAMENTALS program is designed to teach students the Arizona State Standards for Language Arts so students will become critical and lifelong readers. Students will develop skills to become strategic readers in all content areas.

Objectives

In this course, students will increase their vocabulary, improve their spelling, reading fluency, and comprehension skills that will help them increase their learning in all subject areas.

This year, we will be using AVID strategies at Chavez, with all freshmen. AVID is a program that teaches students important skills, for example, organization, critical thinking and note-taking. Using AVID strategies,students can achieve success in high school and future success in college.

The Read 180 program is 2 periods long (students receive onecredit per semester) and includes the following segments:

Whole group instruction

Small-group instruction

The READ 180 software program

Independent reading

A whole-group wrap-up

Materials Required

pencils  pens (blue or black ink) 3-ring binder and paper (1 to be used for all classes)

Homework Requirement

Students must have books, newspapers or magazines at home to read. They are required to read at least 20 minutes a night, five days a week. This may include reading to a child or other family member.

Expectations for Students
  • Attend every class, every day, on time, seated at correct station, ready to learn
  • Show attentive, on-task, respectful behavior of people and property that allows everyone the opportunity to learn
  • Follow all district and school-wide policies including: appropriate dress code and wearing of school ID’s
  • Electronic equipment use (no iPods; cell phones must be off and out of sight)
  • No gum, food or drink is permitted in class (except bottled water)
  • Backpacks, purses, bags, personal electronic equipment, etc. in designated areas ONLY

Classroom Rules

Everyone and Everything is deserving of Respect. No Exceptions. Furthermore, all students are expected to follow additional classroom guidelines and procedures set forth by the teacher, as well as the policies and rules set forth by the Phoenix Union High School district. Infractions will result in referrals to administration for disciplinary action and/or in-class detention time.

Technology is an integral part of the READ 180 classroom. We will follow the district’s policy on vandalism or destruction of property, which is listed below. The student’s replacement cost for equipment is as follows: Headphone ($35); Microphone ($15); r-Book ($25); Book ($10);CD Player ($50); CD ($10); kindle ($190)

Notification to parent(s) or guardian.

Restitution or suitable arrangements for restitution prior to returning to school.

Suspension, or expulsion, for vandalism or destruction of property, depending on the severity of the

offense per administration.

Possible referral to an on-campus, 6 hour anger management educational group. Failure to complete all 6 hours of this group will result in reinstatement of the full suspension.

Grading Policy

90 - 100% = A80 - 89 = B 70 - 79 = C 60 - 69 = D59 = F

30% - Whole/Small Group 30% - Independent Reading 30% - Instructional Software

10%- Final Exam

Attendance Policy

We will follow the district’s attendance policy. Attendance is vital for the optimum success of students in this program. Students must see the teacher either before or after school to receive missed assignments due to absence(s). Make up work is due in the number of excused days the student has missed. Work missed during absence(s) will be made up before/after school (arrangements made by student). Parents/guardians will be notified of excessive absences and a behavioral contract may be implemented. Attendance Hotline: 602-764-4030 or 602-764-4001

Tardy Policy

Students are expected to be in their seats with their materials when the tardy bell sounds. The school policy will be followed to help ensure a successful learning environment for all students. Parents/guardians will be notified of excessive tardies, which will also result in detention.

MAKE-UP POLICY We will follow + 1 policy. This means students have however many days they were absent, plus one more day.
