Plan for Helicoflex Seals

5 Apr 06

At RAL

Martin (keep Patrick informed in light of visit to Garlock):

  • Verify compression of Seals actually achieved with “setting plastic”.
  • Interact with John on Washer design. Check Washer design.
  • Investigate additional DurAl compression plates for qualification.
  • Post mortem on failed seal.
  • Look at surface under microscope.
  • Try to seal again
  • Measure thickness of qualified seals and compressed seals – info to Bill.
  • Photo of Deltas and bump on thick seal – info to Bill.
  • Ask Metrology to look at profile of Delta’s on Seals (unsquashed, squashed etc)
  • Qualify Washers with Seals.

John

  • Design Washer
  • Dimensions – watch obscuring fluid flow or touching Seal.
  • Consider some different seals of thickness 0.3 to 0.2 mm thickness.
  • Tolerances
  • Surface finish
  • Material – CuNi or Cu
  • Schedule – days rather than weeks.
  • Investigate possibility of some quick washers from Workshop
  • John Spencer(x6683) for fast turn round on a few (6+??) for initial tests. (Produce some, then discuss additional numbers for qualification.)
  • Source material for John – discuss with him.
  • Identify company for production.

Martin’s movements:

  • If Washers can be available 10-13 Apr, Martin should cancel CERN trip.
  • If not, Martin should probably go to CERN, unless there is something very useful which can be done to move Seal Project forwards.

Canceling CERN trip (10-13 Apr):

  • Cancel flight
  • Cancel Hotel
  • Cancel taxi
  • Ask Paul to prepare RS Wing #2 (CF part) in prep for Brian:
  • Holes
  • Grounding Tabs
  • Ensure Paul has improved drawings

John’s priorities

  • Washers
  • Complete RS Assy drawings – Martin to check
  • Complete Wiring (OTE, PPF1)
  • Stiffener – 10-13 Apr

PTO

Additional thoughts

Andy Nichols has some thoughts (always worth consulting):

  • Cu plating not good because Ni layer will crack.
  • Peek ?
  • Silicone rubber – rad hard concerns less significant now; what about reaction with C3F8 ?
