Placement Title: Heritage Trainee –Metal Roofing

Placement Provider: J Hempstock and Co Ltd

Reporting to: Elanor Johnson, North Regional Heritage Skills Coordinator

Location: Location of placement: Locations across Manchester and the north

Bursary amount: £1050 per month

Period of Training: 6 ½ months (28 weeks)

Start date: 30th May 2017 TBC

Completion date: 8th December 2017 TBC

Attendance: Monday – Friday, hours TBC

Overall Purpose of the Placement:

The placement will be carried out with J Hempstock and Co Ltd, a long established family business based in Manchester, working on the restoration and installation of roofing in the historic and new build sectors. The trainee will specialise in hard metal roofing on heritage projects, and also work on lead roofing and on metal drainage features, and other tasks as projects dictate. The trainee will work alongside an experienced team under a dedicated supervisor.

Main Areas of Work for the Trainee:

·  To carry out specialist hard metal and lead roofing tasks under supervision of an experienced supervisor, and associated tasks such as downpipes, gutters, and rainwater features.

·  To gain proficiency in a variety of skills in hard metals and lead work. It is anticipated that the following range of skills may be covered during the course of the placement:

o  Recognising architectural / archaeological features

o  Preparation of metals

o  Correct use of hand tools and power tools

o  Dismantling and salvaging original material

o  Cutting out and removing failed metals

o  Repairing and or replacement of metal-work as appropriate

o  Re-building of dismantled elements

o  Building in harmony with existing structure

o  Judging correct alignment / marrying old and new work

o  Aftercare of metal work

·  To work with respect for historic buildings in order to avoid inadvertent harm to the fabric or significance.

·  To be accountable for their own development by undertaking and completing records in accordance with the Bursary Holder agreement

·  To follow specific instructions from their Placement Provider

·  To ensure that all work is undertaken in line with the Placement Provider’s policies and rules and those of the Building Traditional Skills Resilience Community in England project

·  To be responsible for the health and safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work. Trainees will be taught how to work safely and will be taught about the risks associated with the project and how to avoid them

·  The Trainee may be required to perform other duties or tasks as may be reasonably requested by the Placement Provider and will be expected to work within the Bursary Terms and Conditions.

·  The trainee will have to adapt to changes in work patterns, and will work across a variety of projects during the placement learning from a number of supervisors. The trainee must have a willingness to travel and stay away with work on occasion, and a current driving licence.
