SECTION 15121 - PIPE EXPANSION FITTINGS AND LOOPS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.1SUMMARY
- This Section includes pipe expansion fittings and loops for mechanical piping systems, and the following:
- Metal-bellows expansion joints.
- Expansion compensators.
- Rubber expansion joints.
- Flexible-hose expansion joints.
- Slip expansion joints.
- Pipe bends and loops.
- Guides and anchors.
1.2PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
- Compatibility: Products suitable for piping system fluids, materials, working pressures, and temperatures.
- Capability: Absorb 200 percent of maximum piping expansion between anchors.
1.3SUBMITTALS
- Product Data: For each type of expansion fitting indicated.
- Shop Drawings: Signed and sealed by a qualified professional engineer.
- Anchor Details: Detail fabrication of each indicated. Show dimensions and methods of assembly.
- Alignment Guide Details: Detail field assembly and anchorage.
- Welding Certificates: Copies of certificates for welding procedures and personnel.
- Schedule: Indicate manufacturer's number, size, location, and features for each expansion fitting and loop.
1.4QUALITY ASSURANCE
- Engineering Responsibility: Design and preparation of Shop Drawings and calculations for expansion fittings and loops by a qualified professional engineer.
- Welding: Qualify processes and operators according to ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: SectionIX, "Welding and Brazing Qualifications."

2.2PACKLESS EXPANSION JOINTS
- Metal-Bellows Expansion Joints: 175-psigminimum pressure rating, with end fittings and external tie rods for limiting maximum travel, and flanged-end connections, unless otherwise indicated.
- Configuration: Single- and double-bellows type, with base, unless otherwise indicated.
- Joints for Copper Piping: Two-ply, phosphor-bronze bellows and brass shrouds.
- Joints for Stainless-Steel Waterway: Single-ply stainless-steel bellows, stainless-steel-pipe end connections, and steel shroud.
- Joints for Steel Piping: Two-ply, stainless-steel bellows and carbon-steel shroud.
- Expansion Compensators: 175-psig minimum pressure rating, with internal guides, antitorque device, and removable end clip for positioning.

- Joints for Copper Piping: Copper fittings with solder-joint end connections.
- NPS2 and Smaller: Bronze hoses and double-braid bronze sheaths with 700 psig at 70 degFand 500 psig at 450 degF minimum pressure ratings.
- NPS2-1/2 to NPS4: Stainless-steel hoses and double-braid, stainless-steel sheaths with 420 psig at 70 degF and 315 psig at 450 degF minimum pressure ratings.
- Joints for Steel Piping: Carbon-steel fittings.
- End Connections for NPS2 and Smaller: Threaded.
- End Connections for NPS2-1/2 and Larger: Flanged.

2.3PACKED EXPANSION JOINTS
- Slip Expansion Joints: Carbon-steel, packing-type pipe expansion joint designed for repacking under pressure and pressure rated for 250 psig at 400 degF minimum with compound limit stops, flanged or weld ends to match piping system, drip connection if used for steam piping systems, and flanged-end connections, unless otherwise indicated.
- Packing: Asbestos-free polytetrafluoroethylene.
- Double-Slip Type: With base.
2.4GUIDES
- Steel, factory fabricated, with bolted two-section outer cylinder and base for alignment of piping and two-section guiding spider for bolting to pipe.
- THRUST RESTRAINTS
A.All expansion joints must have thrust restraints to limit the motion of the expansion joints within the manufactures minimum to maximum linear motion.
2.6MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS
- Structural Steel: ASTMA36/A36M.
- Bolts and Nuts: ASMEB18.10 or ASTMA183, steel, hex head.
- Washers: ASTMF844, steel, plain, flat washers.
- Mechanical Fasteners: Insert-wedge-type stud with expansion plug anchor for use in hardened portland cement concrete, and tension and shear capacities appropriate for application.
- Stud: Threaded, zinc-coated carbon steel.
- Expansion Plug: Zinc-coated steel.
- Washer and Nut: Zinc-coated steel.
- Chemical Fasteners: Insert-type-stud bonding system anchor for use with hardened portland cement concrete, and tension and shear capacities appropriate for application.
- Bonding Material: ASTMC881, TypeIV, Grade3, two-component epoxy resin suitable for surface temperature of hardened concrete where fastener is to be installed.
- Stud: ASTMA307, zinc-coated carbon steel with continuous thread on stud, unless otherwise indicated.
- Washer and Nut: Zinc-coated steel.
- Concrete: Portland cement mix, 3000 psi minimum. Refer to Division3 Section "Cast-in-Place Concrete" for formwork, reinforcement, and concrete.
- Grout: ASTMC1107, GradeB, factory-mixed and -packaged nonshrink and nonmetallic grout; suitable for interior and exterior applications.
- Characteristics: Post-hardening, volume-adjusting, dry, hydraulic-cement grout.
- Properties: Nonstaining, noncorrosive, and nongaseous.
- Design Mix: 5000-psi28-day compressive strength.
PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.1EXPANSION FITTING INSTALLATION
- Install expansion fittings according to manufacturer’s written instructions.
- Install expansion fittings in sizes matching pipe size in which they are installed.
- Align expansion fittings to avoid end-loading and torsional stress.
- Install thrust restraints according to manufactures written instructions and within the expansion joint manufactures limited constraints.
- PIPE BEND AND LOOP INSTALLATION
- Install pipe bends and loops cold-sprung in tension or compression as required to partly absorb tension or compression produced during anticipated change in temperature.
- Attach pipe bends and loops to anchors.
- Steel Anchors: Attach by welding. Comply with ASMEB31.9 and ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code: SectionIX, “Welding and Brazing Qualifications.”
- Concrete Anchors: Attach by fasteners. Follow fastener manufacturer’s written instructions.
- SWING CONNECTIONS
- Connect risers and branch connections to mains with at least five pipe fittings, including tee in main.
- Connect risers and branch connections to terminal units with at least four pipe fittings, including tee in riser.
- Connect mains and branch connections to terminal units with at least four pipe fittings, including tee in main.
3.4GUIDE INSTALLATION
- Install guides on piping adjoining expansion fittings and loops.
- Attach guides to pipe and secure to building structure.
3.5ANCHOR INSTALLATION
- Install anchors at locations to prevent stresses from exceeding those permitted by ASMEB31.9 and to prevent transfer of loading and stresses to connected equipment.
- Fabricate and install steel anchors by welding steel shapes, plates, and bars to piping and to structure. Comply with ASMEB31.9 and AWSD1.1.
- Construct concrete anchors of poured-in-place concrete of dimensions indicated and include embedded fasteners.
- Install pipe anchors according to expansion fitting manufacturer's written instructions if expansion fittings are indicated.
- Use grout to form flat bearing surfaces for expansion fittings, guides, and anchors installed on or in concrete.
3.6PAINTING
- Touching Up: Cleaning and touchup painting of field welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas of shop paint on miscellaneous metal are specified in Division9 Section "Painting."
- Galvanized Surfaces: Clean welds, bolted connections, and abraded areas and apply galvanizing-repair paint to comply with ASTMA780.
