PIONEERTOWN MOUNTAINS & MISSION CREEK PRESERVES

COMPENSATION - $15/hr + benefits($16/hr with Bachelor’s Degree)

THE POSITION– Full-time, outdoor job, working in all weather conditions. The successful candidate will become part of a team working in land stewardship, public visitation and providing natural history interpretation during Preserve tours.

The successful candidate will be required to live on-site in company-provided Ranger housing.

  • Largest conservation acquisition in recent U.S. history, and
  • 97,000-acre Wind Wolves Preserve in Kern County, the largest nonprofit preserve on the West Coast
  • Has preserved more land in California with private funding than any other conservancy.

JOB LOCATION:PioneertownMountains Preserve and Mission Creek Preserve

PioneertownMountains Preserve is the headquarters for management of more than 40 square miles of land owned by The Wildlands Conservancy in the eastern end of the San Bernardino Mountains to the northwest of Pioneertown. Mission Creek Preserve is located in a transition zone between the Sonoran and Mojave deserts with flora and fauna representing both deserts.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Patrol 35,000 acres, in a 4x4 vehicle and on foot, providing protection and security to the land and its resources.
  • Survey and maintain trails and facilities including fences, irrigation and drip systems, solar panels, and restrooms; report problems you cannot fix.
  • Greet public visitors, provide information, ensure their safety, and enforce rules and regulations of the Preserve.
  • Participate in (or conduct) interpretive workshops for children and adults.
  • Enforce company policies with firmness and diplomacy.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • College coursework in Biological Sciences or related field highly desirable.
  • Excellent physical condition, capable of performing strenuous work outdoors in all weather.
  • Possession of some trade skills, including: carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Able to perform all landscape maintenance tasks, including: operation of weed eaters and mowers, weeding, raking, digging, and installation and maintenance of irrigation systems.
  • Able to competently and safely operate a 4x4 vehicle on extreme road conditions.
  • Knowledge of ecology, natural history, and methodologies for exotic plant eradication and habitat restoration.
  • Good people skills: Outgoing, friendly, able to effectively deal with difficult situations.
  • A positive and dedicated person who believes in our conservation mission.
  • Ability to speak Spanish would be a plus.
  • Actively involved in environmental protection or conservation
  • Experience working with ethnically diverse clients

BENEFIT SUMMARY

  • Health Insurance - $300/mo., starting the first of the month after hire date, towards health insurance premiums for TWC sponsored medical, dental, vision and chiropractic/acupuncture plans. That amount increases after each year of service up to a maximum of $1000/mo. after 15 years of service. Unused premium monies may be taken in cash or put in TWC’s 401(k) Plan. Employees may currently select from 10 Blue Shield plans, including PPO’s and HMO’s; 2 Delta Dental Plans, 1 HMO and 1 PPO; a VSP vision plan; and an American Specialty Health Acupuncture/Chiropractic plan.
  • 401(k) Plan - TWC matches employee contributions up to 3%.
  • Vacation – 10 days (80 hours) per year with increases of 1 day (8 hours) per year up to a total of 17 days (136 hours) per year during the 8th and each subsequent year.
  • Holidays – 9 days (72 hours) per year
  • Sick Leave – 40 hours per calendar year during first year with increases of 4 hours per year up to a total of 80 hours during the 11th and each year thereafter.
