Each scholarship you are applying for should be attached in a separate packet that includes all of the following items:

______Pine Island Scholarship Application Form –check which scholarship you are applying for and attach that form (the Scholarship Application Form) to the front of each packet.

______Background Information Sheet.

______Letter of Recommendation from a teacher.

______Letter of Recommendation from a community member who is not a relative and not affiliated with the school.

______A letter from the applicant to each of the scholarship donors including the information listed in item V. on the Background Information Sheet.

** Before you turn in your completed application, have a teacher, parent, and/or friend look it over for errors.

** Students are responsible for making individual copies of the information for each award applied for. Copies are to be made outside of school and handed in to the high school office by 3:10 p.m. on March 25th, 2016.

** We urge all scholarship winners to write a personalized “Thank you” to the group sponsoring their scholarship.

** All scholarships will be given out at the Annual Awards Program on May 18th at 7:30 p.m. in the Maroon Gym.

V. For each scholarship you are applying for, you must submit a letter, neatly written (preferably typed). The letter should include statements about your personal interests, school plans, career goals, and why you feel you would like to be considered for a scholarship.

AMERICAN LEGION & AUXILIARY CITIZENSHIP AWARD

The American Legion and Auxiliary have initiated a Citizenship Award Program to recognize, annually, a graduating senior girl who best displays this quality. The award is to be used to further their education. Qualities upon which selection is to be made are as follows: courage, leadership, character, scholarship (at least a C average), service, and courtesy. Complete an essay on “What Citizenship Means to Me” in 100 words or less. This award will be presented to the student at the annual award ceremony in May.

AMERICAN LEGION SCHOLARSHIP

The American Legion will award one scholarship to a graduating senior. To apply, students must write a letter of application stating their college and career plans and why they believe they should receive the scholarship. The recipient will be chosen by the American Legion scholarship committee. The scholarship will be distributed after the student has completed their first term at college.

BEVCOMM SCHOLARSHIP

Bevcomm will award one $1,500 scholarship to a graduating senior. To apply, students must write a letter of application stating their college and career plans and why they believe they should receive the scholarship. Interested students must have an interest in business and/or technology. Interest in working or living in a rural community is also a plus. The recipient will be chosen by the Bevcomm scholarship committee. The scholarship will be distributed after the student has completed their first term at college.

CLASS OF 1974 PANTHER SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION

The Pine Island High School Class of 1974 is offering two $500 scholarships to a graduating Pine Island senior that has provided assistance to a cause, been actively involved in a school extracurricular activity(s) and/or a community job, has been a friend and a confident to classmates and has a vision of what they want to pursue after graduation.

This scholarship has been created in memory of the qualities and personalities of the Class of 1974 classmates that have passed on. Those classmates include: Jane Jasperson, Tony Murray, Ted Nei, Steve Kramer, Rick Hewitt, Pat Quick, and Larry Buck.

FFA ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP

At least one scholarship will be awarded to the chosen applicant, with the possibility of more scholarships depending on interest and finances, after completion of the first semester of college. The scholarship will be mailed directly to the recipient’s post-secondary school.

Who may apply? Any current Pine IslandFFA member pursuing higher education, including high school graduates who are current Pine Island FFA members.

GOODHUE COUNTY COOPERATIVE ELECTRIC

This award will be given to a deserving senior who will be attending a vocational school or college in the fall. The amount of the award is $500. Student must be a son or daughter of a current member of Goodhue County Cooperative Electric. To apply, students must write a letter of application stating their college and career plans and why they should receive this scholarship. Recipient will be chosen by the local scholarship committee. The scholarship will be distributed after the student has completed their first term at college.

HOWARD WEST SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students who have attended Pine Island High School to pursue a post high school education. The principal of the fund is $10,000, which will be invested with the interest to be awarded each year in scholarship(s).

The scholarship(s) will be awarded each year and will be granted after successful completion of the first semester or first quarter of college. It is made to a student who best demonstrates the qualities of leadership and scholastics. The scholarship is not required to be repaid; however, recipients are encouraged to return one-half of the scholarship after completion of their education to insure continued funds for future graduates. Gifts to the fund will be accepted and invested.

The awards are to be made by a committee composed of a teacher, counselor and high school principal. The scholarships are to be made before graduation. Interested students should submit a letter of application including their qualifications for the scholarship to the high school counselor.

JUDY MILLER SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize and promote academic and athletic achievements; the money is to be used to further the recipient’s college education.

Candidates for this award must be senior girls who are involved with the track program at Pine Island High school. This award is meant to recognize scholastic aptitude with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and participation in the Pine Island Track program. The candidate for this award must exhibit qualities that were important to Judy: attitude, motivation, sportsmanship, growth and improvement. The recipient of this award need not excel at track and field, but should be someone who has demonstrated commitment to personal improvement and growth.

The principal of this fund is $12,000 (estimated), which will be invested with the interest to be awarded each year in a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded each year and will be granted after successful completion of the first semester or quarter of college. The scholarship is not required to be repaid; however, gifts to the fund will be accepted and reinvested.

Selection of this recipient is to be made by the girls track coach, the athletic director, and two high school teachers. One vote by the athletic director, one vote by each teacher, and two votes by the girls track coach. Interested students should send a letter of application to the high school counselor.

LEON HAYWARD SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Criteria for scholarship:

-  The student must have a financial need.

-  Every student is eligible who is accepted into an accredited school.

-  The student must have attended Pine Island High School for the last two academic years.

-  The amount of grant will be recommended by the committee and more than one student is eligible per year.

-  The recipients may obtain additional grants in later years if funds are available.

-  Although the recipient shall be under no obligation, it is hoped that he/she will return at least 50% of his/her total grant after he/she begins a working career.

-  It is hoped that the student will work and pay for part of his/her education.

-  Maximum grant will be $1,000.

-  This policy shall be subject to review every two years.

Selection of this scholarship will be made by Chairman of the Board of Education, Superintendent, High School Principal, and two teachers.

MEL SCHROEDER ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

The purpose of this scholarship is to promote academic and athletic achievements. The money is to be used to further the recipient’s post-secondary education. The principal of the fund is $2,000, which is to be invested and the interest awarded each year to the senior selected. The winner is not obligated to repay the scholarship; however, gifts to the fund will be accepted and invested.

Selection of the recipient shall be based on academic and athletic achievements. Consideration shall be given to the overall conduct of the student and general contribution to a positive school atmosphere. The selection is to be made by a committee consisting of all head coaches (who are also full-time staff members), athletic director, high school counselor, high school principal and superintendent.

The award will be the interest on principal for one year (about $200) and will be given each year to a graduating senior along with a plaque for the recipient. The recipient’s name and year of award will be entered on the Mel Schroeder plaque, which will be on display in the high school.

The money will be awarded to the student for second quarter (or second semester) expenses at a post-secondary school of his/her choice. The Pine Island School Board can, from time to time, increase the size of the original award should the fund develop a sizeable surplus in the future.

PEOPLE’S COOP POWER SCHOLARSHIP (from People’s Energy Cooperative)

Award is given to deserving seniors who will be attending a vocational school or college in the fall. Amount of award varies from year to year.

To apply, students must write a letter of application stating their college and career plans and why they should receive this scholarship. Include in your letter if your family home is served by Peoples Coop Power Company.

The scholarship will be distributed after the student has completed their first term at college.

P.I.E.A. FUTURE TEACHER SCHOLARSHIP

A $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior planning to become a teacher. The student is to write a letter to the PIEA scholarship committee explaining their future plans and why they have chosen the teaching profession as their career.

PINE ISLAND BANK SCHOLARSHIP

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage students who have attended Pine Island High School to pursue a post high school education. Preference will be given to students pursuing a business related four year degree. The amount of the award for 2016 is $750.00. The student will receive the scholarship after successfully completing their 1st semester/quarter of post-secondary education.

Every student is eligible who is accepted into an accredited school. The graduating student must have attended Pine Island High School for the last two academic years or last two academic years prior to attending a post-secondary program.

Each applicant must submit a short essay explaining the business field they are pursuing and why. Please indicate in your letter of application if you or your family are customers of Pine Island Bank.
