Pilot Projects Review

Thepilot projects review process is an open, honest and professional discussion of a Forest Enhancement Society funded project that enables the individuals involved to learn for themselves what went well and what could have gone better. The final report should include data and photos collected at all stages of project development. However, it can also be performed after each identifiable event within a project so that lessons learned can be applied immediately.

Completing the Pilot Project Review - Tips

Tips for Completing the review
Schedule shortly after the activity is completed.
Focus on WHAT not WHO.
Establish clear ground rules with those involved: encourage candor and openness, this is dialog – not lecture or debate, focus on items that can be fixed.
The leader’s role is to ensure we are able to learn from the pilot delivery.
1. What did we set out to do?
Establish the facts.
Purpose and objectives of the project and definition of success:
-Key tasks involved.
-Conditions under which each task may need to be performed.
-Acceptable standards for success (Explaining what “Right” looks like).
2. What actually happened?
-Continue to establish the facts.
-Participants should come to agreement on what actually happened.
-Pool multiple perspectives to build a shared picture of what happened.
3. Why did it happen?
-Analysis of cause and effect
-Focus on WHAT not WHO.
-Provide progressive refinement for drawing out explanations of what occurred. Focus particularly on the successes and the “what was tricky”. This will lead into developing possible solutions.
4. What are we going to do next time?
-Solutions will arise naturally once problems are identified and understood.
-Focus on items you can fix, rather than external forces outside of your control.
-Identify areas where there was good performance. This will help repeat success and create a balanced approach.
Sustain/Maintain Strengths:
Improve Weaknesses:
Did lessons learned, trends, concerns, processes or ideas come up that you want to share immediately with other projects/work units?
-Any other:Issues, discussions, or recommendations that are particularly relevant?
