Salary Range: $72,168-$93,821

Duty Location: Elkhart, KS

Organizational Unit: Region 2 - Pike and San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron and Comanche National Grasslands. The Cimarron National Grassland is located in the southwest corner or Kansas with the District office is located in Elkhart, KS.

About the Cimarron National Grassland: The Cimarron National Grassland covers just over 108,000 acres of public land that is managed for multiple resources use including range, minerals, wildlife, water, fire and developed and dispersed recreation. The landscape has shortgrass prairie, sandsage brush landscapes, and a cottonwood gallery along the Cimarron River corridor. The Cimarron National Grassland has the unique distinction to manage the only USFS lands in Kansas. Additionally, there are 23 miles of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail on the Cimarron National Grassland, which is the largest segment in public ownership and is a focus of management on the district. A management emphasis is for Lesser Prairie Chicken conservation. In addition to the District Ranger, there are 9 full-time permanent positions on the district. The Cimarron Ranger District operates closely with the neighboring Comanche National Grassland with offices located in Springfield and La Junta, CO, and a number of District employees routinely work cooperatively across these units sharing work and responsibilities across geographic lines.

DUTIES: Administers a Ranger District characterized by a number of multiple-use resource values. Participates with Forest Supervisor, primary Forest staff, and other District Rangers in developing and organizing Forest policies and programs and other related concerns for management and protection of Forest resources. Develops, organizes, and implements functional long-range planning and short-range action plans, and periodically revises program operations for consistency with strategies and program emphasis. Coordinates resource management planning efforts interagency and intra-agency. Develops organization and personnel management strategies and options. Is responsible for program management, planning, budgeting and management information for identifying work force and organizational needs, and district priorities. Is also responsible for ensuring district expenditures are legal, meet charged-as-worked and congressional intent, and remain within budget limits. Participates in general management reviews and certification examinations, and conducts functional inspections for compliance with policies, plans, regulations, and work planning. Establishes and maintains cooperative relations with local, county, and State representatives, civic groups, cooperators, permittees, general public, and industry. Promotes understanding and gains support for Forest Service program goals and objectives, policies, and regulations.

The District Ranger has responsibility for providing technical and administrative leadership in, and direction to, all programs throughout the Comanche Ranger District. The Ranger functions and contributes as a full member of the Pike/San Isabel National Forests & Cimarron/Comanche National Grasslands Leadership Team.

PIKE/SAN ISABEL NATIONAL FORESTS CIMARRON/COMANCHE NATIONAL GRASSLANDS

The Pike & San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron & Comanche National Grasslands unit is comprised of eight Ranger Districts stretching over 3 million acres from Leadville, CO to Elkhart, KS. The Forest Supervisor’s Office is located in Pueblo, Colorado.The Forest and Grasslands have a complexity of resources including range, timber, wildlife, water, wilderness areas, developed and dispersed recreation, and ski areas.

MEDICAL/HOSPITAL FACILITIES: One medical hospital with 34 beds, medical clinic, nursing care center with 60 beds, and a special care unit. Elkhart has a relatively new assisted living facility. There are six doctors, a dentist and optometrist in Elkhart. The nearest regional health center is in Amarillo, TX.
