Overview
This is an informational podcast of the Native people in Alabama during the Archaic period. It shows Russell Cave where digs revealed that native peoples used this as a winter shelter as well as a permanent shelter for years. It also shows artifacts that were uncovered during the digs that were left behind by the native people which give us a glimpse into their lives.

America has been inhabited by people for 1,000s of years. Earlier inhabitants, known as Prehistoric people, were the first known to inhabit America. / Prehistoric time, time before history was written by people, has been divided into 4 time bands or periods. We will be looking at the Archaic Period which began around 8000 B.C. and continued until the Woodland period began.

What appears to be an ordinary natural opening in a rocky hillside was once a temporary shelter and a winter home for native people 10,000 years ago. / Excavation of Russell cave indicates that this natural shelter was used by nomadic people for temporary shelter as well as a hunting camp then later became a permanent home for people beginning in the early part of the Archaic period and continued through the Woodland period. / Now lets go inside to see what the people might have seen some 10,000 years ago. The front of the cave served not only as a shelter from the elements but also as a multipurpose room while the deeper depths were used for protection, storage, and burials.

One use for the front of the cave was as a “kitchen”. Firepits and pieces of charcoal uncovered during the excavationsprovide information about how these early people “cooked”. Fire rings on the ceiling of the cave also provide evidence of these fires. / Artifacts, handmade things from an earlier culture, have been found in Russell cave which also give us a glimpse into the lives of Archaic people. A variety of points have been discovered which were used for hunting. / While most of the points found have also been discovered in other areas, this one is unique to Russell Cave. The different points demonstrate the range of techniques used by early people. Discoveries also indicate that early people traded with other groups.

Other artifacts unearthed include tools used for farming / chopping, scrapping / and a number of daily chores. These tools show us how creative early people were using what resources they had available.

Their creativity also shows in the discovery of this simple musical instrument and bone used for a game piece. / However one of the most significant or important inventions was that of the atlatl. This invention allowed hunters to throw spears further and more accurately. / This one tool changed the way that people hunted and was a turning point in the history of early people.
