2013-14 IMPACT OF SPORT PREMIUM FUND
  • Hiring qualified sports coaches to work with teachers and pupils:
Whole School
All pupils in Year R - 2 had access to six qualified sports coaches in order to have a “taster” of a range of sports that they may pursue at a later date.
Parents were also given the details of the coaching provision regarding these sports available to their children in the local community.
As this was also a sponsored event, pupils were focusing on their “personal best” as well as raising £4100 for further development of the outside areas for physical activity.
Year 1
Pupils experienced 4 days of cricket coaching over a 4 week period. This developed specific skills and also drew pupils attention to what the sport entails and availability of further coaching on offer in the local community.
Year 2
The school was able to employ our Gymnastics Coach to undertake additional coaching of our more able pupils in order for them to take part in the Kent School Gymnastics Competition. This enabled them to focus on their personal best and experience competition at a high level with other pupils unknown to them. Our pupils came sixth out of the whole of Kent.
  • Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in P.E and providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in P.E.
Our shadow P.E Co-ordinator was able to develop her leadership skills and P.E teaching skills by working alongside a qualified and very experienced P.E Co-ordinator. This included observing lessons, giving feedback to staff on the quality of pupil learning, and organising and attending sports events both off and on-site to develop management and organisational skills.
This has ensured that she is now undertaking a year of co-ordinating P.E, overseen by the existing P.E Co-ordinator. This has been due to increased knowledge and skill in P.E delivery and leadership of the subject, overseen by the existing P.E Co-ordinator.
This two year planned process has ensured high quality succession planning to maintain high quality provision.
The school has also been able to fund an additional member of staff who holds the Gymnastic Teaching Qualification. This has ensured that staff are able to teach gymnastic movements correctly and support appropriately.
  • Paying staff to run/take part in competitions
Funding has allowed our two P.E Co-ordinators to have quality time to prepare for whole school internal infant agility competitions and presentations. (See ‘Internal competitions’).
It has also allowed for our two P.E Co-ordinators to be released from their daily classroom teaching to organise and supervise pupils at local and Kent sporting events and activities.
(See ‘Pooling Funding with that of other schools’).
  • Running Sport Competitions:
Community Competition
Callis organised and hosted the first ever Infant Gymnastics Event in which pupils from five schools from the local community spent the morning practising their skills with a qualified coach and P.E teachers. All schools performed a routine to music and were presented with medals of achievement.
This event brought local schools together, enabled pupils to see the standard of gymnastics from other pupils, as well as demonstrate their achievements.
This was a highly positive morning.
Internal Competitions
Internal infant agility competitions were held focusing on the skills of bouncing, launching, throwing (Years 1 and 2) and balancing (Year R).
Pupils’ had greater opportunity to receive specific skill coaching and practise to achieve their personal best. Pupils’ experienced having their results recorded and ordered within the year group; first, second and third for boys and girls. Results were given to the whole school in a “Podium Event” assembly where bronze, silver and gold medals were awarded.
These events demonstrated development in pupil confidence, perseverance by all pupils and celebration of individual pupils. Outcomes were also shared with parents in our newsletter and on our website.
  • Buying materials for P.E
The school has purchased additional infant agility resources. This has ensured that every child in a class has maximum access to the equipment in allocated time, resulting in maximum opportunity to practise skills. This then resulted in whole school infant agility competitions and podium events. All children have experienced competitions during the academic year. (See ‘Internal Competitions’).
The school also purchased bronze, silver and gold medals to be used at all of our internal sports competitions. The presentation of these highlighted to all pupils that achievement should be highly valued and gave the winning pupils a great sense of pride.
  • Link to Enhanced Healthy School Action Plan (improving lifestyles)
July 2014 - May 2015
The school was able to link with our Enhanced Healthy School Priority to increase the number of parents who feel that the school provides opportunities to find out about healthy lifestyles from 73% to 80%. A successful Reception parents morning was held with our school nurse who delivered information and gave advice about healthy diets for pupils’ well-being.
A Year 2 ‘Play and Stay’ provided all Year 2 parents with an active afternoon of a taster of different sports/physical activities that they can enjoy with their children. The Enhanced Healthy School Priority indicators of success will be concluded in May 2015, however there was 99% attendance and positive response.
  • Pooling Funding with that of other local schools
Callis was able to buy in membership to the Thanet Infant School ‘Passport’. This gave the school access to organised sports competitions and events both in the local community and across Kent.
