Physical Education Info for Parents and Students

Purpose:

Physical Education is a required course in the Scranton School District. It focuses on helping students gain an understanding of the benefits that physical activity and exercise has on not only the body, but the mind as well. At Northeast Scranton Intermediate School, the physical education department will provide lifetime fitness activities that the students can use in the future.

Students will have PE for two consecutive class periods one day during the five day school cycle. Some students may have PE only one class period due to their individual schedule. At the start of the period, students are to report directly to their appropriate locker rooms.

Girls=2nd floor locker room

Boys=Ground floor locker room.

After changing (five minutes) the students are to report to the gym. Any student tardy must have a signed pass with the current time written on it. Failure to do so will result in detention after the 2nd offense.

Grading: (Numeric)

-The students will be graded on four criteria. Criteria include attendance, participation, dressing, and behavior. Attendance is scored out of 1 point. The other three are grouped into one category. The highest possible score for this categoryis 3. Scores may differ from time to time if the student did not meet any (or more than one) criteria.

Attendance: The student is responsible to be in class at all times.

Dressing-Any and all jewelry must be removed prior to class. The students are allowed to wear their school uniform (except girls cannot wear skirts) or they may change into shorts, sweatpants, or wind-pants. All shirts must have sleeves. Shirts include t-shirts or sweatshirts. Nothing must be deemed inappropriate with obscene or offensive pictures/logos/writing as it will result in discipline. Also, clothing shall be the student’s size not any size too big or too small. NO PAJAMA PANTS, JEANS, YOGA PANTS, TANKTOPS, OR CUTOFFS. SNEAKERS MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES. NO SNEAKERS=NO PE.

  1. 1ST CONSEQUENCE WITHOUT SNEAKERS=REMOVAL FROM ACTIVITY AND LOSS OF POINTS
  2. 2ND OFFENSE AND ANYTIME AFTER=REMOVAL FROM ACTIVITY/LOSS OF POINTS AND WRITING ASSIGNMENT THAT MUST BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF CLASS.

Participation-student is to participate at HIS/HER BEST ability.

Behavior-All students will show each other, themselves and the teacher the upmost respect. In any team activity that is performed good sportsmanship must be displayed at ALL times.

* Failure to meet these requirements will result in consequence. Consequences may include loss of points, removal from activity, discipline referral and/or parent contact.

Important information for Parents:

  • All students are encouraged to purchase a dial lock. Locks can be placed on any available locker within their respective locker room. I cannot guarantee the safekeeping of your child’s belongings. This lock will prevent the possibility of anyone having access to your child’s belongings while he or she is participating in class. Locks can stay on for the entire school year only to be removed before the last day of school.
  • Medical Excuses are ONLY Permitted when your child is unable to take part in class. This includes the child’s physician or the school nurse. If this occurs, the child will be given an alternative assignment (non-physically active) where he/she has the opportunity to obtain full credit for the class period. This will continue for as long as the medical excuse is valid. The student will not be able to return to participating until cleared by HIS/HER OWN PHYSICIAN.

I look forward to a wonderful year!
