Course Number and Title: PHT 2231 Therapeutic Exercise Prescription and Application in Physical Therapy

Course Description:

1 Credit Course (1 hour per week for 16 weeks) (AS)

This course is designed to assist the student in applying principles related to prescription and application of therapeutic exercise as a Physical Therapist Assistant. The course is designed for both the first and second year PTA students, as an elective course, used to supplement the concepts and hands on application of therapeutic exercises learned in the PTA technical course work. Students will utilize critical thinking, interpersonal communication and motor skills to identify, demonstrate and synthesize appropriate therapeutic exercise interventions for patients and clients based on plans of care, patient/client needs and accepted exercise theory.

Prerequisites: Admission to the physical therapist assistant program; completion of BSC 2085C, ENC110, MAT 1033 or higher, and PSY 2012 with a grade of "C" or better; completion of or concurrent enrollment in BSC 2086C.

Co-requisite: Concurrent enrollment in PHT technical course work

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Apply scientific principles to correctly perform basic therapeutic exercise procedures
  1. Synthesize appropriate therapeutic exercise programs
  1. Appraise need for and complete therapeutic exercise program modification

Course Content Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Comprehend general principles of exercise theory
  2. Explain and give examples of therapeutic exercise
  3. Describe characteristics of therapeutic exercise interventions
  4. Discuss safety issues related to the application of therapeutic exercise
  5. Explain the relationship between Disablement models and the application of therapeutic exercise interventions
  6. Identify indications and contraindications to specific therapeutic exercise
  1. Apply scientific principles to correctly perform basic therapeutic exercise procedures
  2. Determine appropriate therapeutic exercise application to specific patient/client needs
  3. Demonstrate ability to instruct patients during completion of therapeutic exercise activities
  4. Assess the appropriateness of selected therapeutic exercise
  5. Assess if selected therapeutic exercise activities are effective or ineffective
  1. Synthesize appropriate therapeutic exercise programs
  2. Design various evidence based therapeutic exercise programs based on the plan of care and patient/client needs
  3. Integrate components of clinical decision making into therapeutic exercise plans
  4. Adapt therapeutic exercise plans to patient abilities and progress
  5. Compose clinical documentation which supports use of therapeutic exercise
  1. Appraise need for and complete therapeutic exercise program modification
  2. Justify the need to modify a therapeutic exercise program based on plan of care and specific patient/client progression
  3. Choose appropriate progressions of therapeutic exercise activities based plan of care and patient/client needs
  4. Compare and contrast selected therapeutic exercise activities on:

  7. Specificity
  8. Adherence to plan of care
