COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to give students an exploration of a variety of occupational areas which will assist them in the development of career and education goals & plans. Students will utilize technology-based research tools to locate and collect information and demonstrate computer literacy skills by communicating using e-mail, Internet, and other technology tools with an emphasis on word processing and presentation software. All students must provide parental/guardian approval for Internet use.

COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

By the completion of this course:

  1. Students will be able to use a variety of sources to explore chosen occupational areas/careers and create anindividualized career plan.
  2. Students will understand academic achievement and performance required to meet career goals.
  3. Students will demonstrate decision-making skills and apply them to career & educational planning
  4. Students will demonstrate communication teamwork skills required for the workplace.
  5. Students will demonstrate knowledge of computer-related concepts and terminology.
  6. Students will demonstrate knowledge of Internet vocabulary and ability to use online tools to conduct research.
  7. Students will improve basic math and writing skills by completing a series of related integrated activities.

MATERIALS NEEDED

All required textbooks for the course will be provided in the classroom. Students should come to class prepared to take notes.

GRADING

Grading will be done on a point system using the following scale:
90 – 100% = A
80 – 89% = B
70 – 79% = C
60 – 69% = D
0 – 59% = F / Your grade is cumulative through the semester. Grade percentages will be based on the following:

Your Final Semester Grade will be determined as follows:

  • Cumulative Semester Grade90%
  • Final Exam10%

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS

All students are required to obtain a grade of C or better to be considered proficient in the CTE class. Every student is expected to produce original and independent work. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If you turn in assignments completed by a classmate, or a classmate turns in assignments by you, both of you will receive a failing grade for that assignment(s). A student may receive an administrative referral for academic dishonesty.

ATTENDANCE/TARDY POLICY

The policies outlined in the Metro Tech Student Guide will be followed. Students that are tardy in a morning class (period 1, 2, and/or 4) will attend a ½ hour detention (MART) in the assigned location before their lunch. A tardy in an afternoon class requires the student to attend a ½ hour detention (MART) immediately after school in the assigned location. Any tardy of more than 28 minutes will be considered an absence for the class period.

MAKE-UP POLICY

Missed or incomplete work must be made up to document student learning. Points may be deducted for late assignments.

TEAM TUTORING SCHEDULE

Tutoring assistance when assigned by the teacher is mandatory during advisory. Students are also responsible to attend advisory tutoring when absent or for academic support. Additional tutoring after school will be provided on a case-by-case basis. Speak to your teacher to determine tutoring availability during lunch and/or after school.

TITLE I PROGRAMAcademic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding is available in the areas of: Math, Reading and English. If interested, please contact the Principal, or Assistant Principal for Instruction.

CLASSROOM PROCEDURES

To assure each student the best environment for learning, the following classroom guidelines have been established:

  1. When the bell rings, be in your seat and ready to work.
  2. Be prepared for class by bringing a pen or pencil, paper, eraser, 3-4 markers, 2-3 highlighters in different colors, a pocket folder, sticky notes and a three ring binder notebook.
  3. Disciplinary problems will not be tolerated. Disruption of the class and/or deliberate misuse or abuse of the equipment will result in an administrative referral for discipline. Any misuse must be reported immediately.
  4. Teacher assigned consequences are expected to be fulfilled.
  5. Cheating, including plagiarism will result in the grade of “F” or 0 points for the assignment or test and may result in a failing grade for this course and a disciplinary referral.
  6. No food, gum, or drinks will be allowed in the classroom.
  7. Before leaving the class, the student is responsible to make their sure work area is clean and neat.
  8. Read all assignment directions carefully before beginning any projects.
  9. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES OF ANY KIND ARE TO BE USED IN THE CLASSROOM. PERSONAL VIDEO AND VOICE RECORDING ARE EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED & WILL RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY CONSEQUENCES. VISIBLEELECTRONIC DEVICES WILL BE COLLECTED AND TURNED INTO ADMINISTRATION.

INTERNET USAGE

The use of Internet in the classroom will be in accordance with district procedures and teacher instructions for educational purposes only. Unauthorized Internet use will result in disciplinary consequences.

PARENTVUE

Parents will be receiving information regarding our computerized Parent Experience. One of the features of this program provides a link that allows both the parent and student to view the student’s information, academic progress and missing assignments. Parents and students will be notified when the site is ready.
