Nicole Larson, MSW

Nicole came across Mending the Soul when searching for a curriculum that would meaningfully blend Christian theology and mental health science. As a social worker and provider of mental health care, she found there to be a lack of good materials that accounted for both Christianity and mental health. While she was volunteering to help develop a faith-based program for an agency wanting to serve sex-trafficked minors, she came across Mending the Soul and began training and partnering with them and is now on the NW Mending the Soul leadership team.

Nicole received her undergraduate degree in both Sociology and Communication Studies from the University of San Diego. She went on to get her Master’s degree in Social Work in 2005 from the University of Southern California. Nicole interned as a psychiatric social worker at a high school of 5,000 kids in south central Los Angeles. The kids she worked with had experienced a tremendous amount of trauma and abuse including abusive family relationships, grief, gang involvement, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol addiction, and some who experienced severe and persistent mental illness. She also worked doing attendance counseling at an elementary school where the emphasis was on engaging with families and providing counseling. Nicole then went on to intern at a coalition with the mission of addressing homelessness and hunger issues in Los Angeles. She organized and directed advocacy efforts for dozens of nonprofits around issues of homelessness and welfare in L.A. She also worked as a graduate research assistant for the School of Social Work at USC.

Nicole moved to Portland Oregon and began work as a counselor and case manager for homeless youth in downtown Portland for 3 years. The youth Nicole worked with had significant needs involving issues such as extensive trauma & abuse histories, sexual exploitation/prostitution, drug & alcohol addiction, foster care involvement, criminal records, health needs, and a wide array of mental health presentations, including severe and persistent mental illness. Nicole fell in love with this population of kids.

Nicole is very happily married and has 2 precious young children. She stays at home now to care for them and also counsels part time through her church, River West. She has also been a mentor through Mending the Soul to survivors of sex-trafficking in Portland for the last 2 ½ years. Nicole is passionate to see people experience the healing work of God in their lives and equipping churches to respond to the extensive needs of those who have experienced trauma.
