·  The JV competition is open to any high school student.

Invitations

·  Invitations will be issued by region with a cap of 128 per competition

·  Each region will receive slots for 16 participants of each gender if they’ve met standards.

·  The emphasis for the League is to try to build school teams rather than individual competitions (individuals have other places to compete). With that in mind, each region can develop its own system for deciding which teams/individuals attend.

Format/Scoring

·  Climbers will have 3 hours to complete as many boulder problems and climbs as they want. The top 5 will be scored with the requirement that a climber have at least 2 scores in each category (climbing and bouldering)

·  Flashing problems or routes will earn a bonus.

o  Flash bonus = 30 pt + number of problem/climb (Ex: Flash #7 = 37 pts)

o  Leading gets a 20-pt bonus + the number of the climb (Ex: Climb 14 on lead = 34 points).

o  You may not get the lead bonus if you top rope the climb first.

·  Climbers will be scored as individuals and recognized in their genders by overall finish.

·  Teams will be composed of the sum of the top 3 individual scores by gender. If teams do not have 3 competitors, we will total as many scores as they have.

Philosophy of the High School Climbing League:

·  Encourage the team aspect of the sport (individuals have other forums in which to compete)

·  Take steps to make sure our results and hardware are compatible with other high school competitions (e.g. send home trophies and results by girls/boys)

·  Encourage well-rounded climbers (they will be required to complete bouldering problems and roped climbs)

·  Support all regions, schools, and individuals trying to develop high school climbing

·  Have an event that is limited to the best climbers in the state but allow others a forum to compete as well (varsity vs jv concept)

·  Create systems that incentivize teams and individuals to get more people involved

·  Limit the bureaucracy and simplify the rules as much as possible

·  Trust that regions, teams, and schools are best-equipped to determine their most competitive students.

·  Increase awareness of high school climbing

·  Remember that, above all, these events should be fun.
