Section 1: Decoding
[10 words for decoding worth 2 marks each, total marks for this section= 20]
2 marks = Student can easily read the word; 1 mark = student can read the word after several attempts or after some time or with slightly unusual pronunciation due to lack of understanding of the letter combinations; 0 marks = student misreads or is unable to read the word.
Section 2:
Part (a) Reading fluency- the purpose of the (a) questions is to test ability to read with fluency and expression.
Scoring Guide: [5 questions worth 4 marks each, total marks for this section= 20]
4 marks = student reads with fluency and expression; 3 marks = students reads with fluency but lack of expression; 2 marks = student stumbles on one word only; 1 mark = student stumbles on 2 or more words or has a very slow reading speed.
Part (b)the purpose of the (b) questions is to test understanding of vocab [20/100 marks]
Scoring Guide: [5 questions worth 4 marks each, total marks for this section= 20]
4 marks = Student give the correct meaning of the word by giving some indication of understanding such as a gesture or phrase; 0 marks = student does not know the meaning of the word.
Part (c)the purpose of the (c) questions is to test student's ability to use new vocab [20/100 marks]

4 marks = Student makes a grammatically correct sentence that shows that they understand the meaning of the word; 3 marks = Student makes a grammatically incorrect sentence that shows they know the meaning of the word; 2 marks = Student makes an incomplete sentence using the word; 1 mark = student gestures that they know what the word means but cannot make a sentence; 0 marks = student cannot make a sentence using the word and does not know what it means.
Part (d)the purpose of the (d) questions is to test student's communication ability [20/100 marks]

4 marks = Student gives an answer that shows that they understand the text/picture and can express their thoughts about it; 2 marks = Student replies in a way that indicates that they understand the text but are having difficulty phrasing an answer or gives a reply indicating that they have a partial understanding of the text; 0 marks = Student cannot answer the question.
