1SECURITY

  • Phase II is in effect for the ‘buffer zone’ and phase I for the rest of Georgia;
  • EU observation mission is going to arrive in Georgia tomorrow, 01 October 2008. Their deployment will allow increasing UN and OSCE assessment missions.

  • Nothing new to report;

  • Nothing new to report;

6TRANSPORT & SUPPLY CHAIN

  • As of today, inter-agency transport services and assistance with the distribution has been provided to ADRA, CARE, IOCC, IOM, SC, UNICEF and WVI.
  • So far approx. 100 truck loads of various capacities have been made available;
  • WFP warehouses for inter-agency use are located in Tbilisi, Gori and Poti.Organisations benefiting from the common services so far are NRC, Oxfam, Save the Children and UNICEF. WVI is running a warehouse in Tbilisi, which is also used by SC. UNHCR has a warehouse in Gori which is also used by MercyCorps.
  • WFP is coordinating together with ICRC the distribution in Gori, to make sure there areno overlap and no gaps.
  • This week, assistance with storage and transport of goods will be given to ADRA for the distribution of NFIs in Tbilisi, and to UNHCR for the distribution of matrices in Tbilisi and Gori area.
  • WFP is expecting more vegetable oil and sugar to arrive by ship from Europe this week.

9UPDATE FROM THE AGENCIES

IOCC

  • Is expecting a shipment of school kitsfor distribution in Tbilisi;
  • Is requesting assistance with storage and transport once those items have arrived, (date tbc);

UNHCR

  • Is continuing with the distribution of matrices in Tbilisi and Gori area; around 10.000 have been distributed last week, another 10.000 are planned for this week; every day 5 truck loads: 3 organised by WFP, 2 organised by UNHCR;
  • Urgent need for blankets, but they have not been purchased yet;

UNICEF

  • Still have 21.000 household kits (buckets, jerry cans, soap and chlorine tablets); area for distribution still to be identified;
  • 5 more truck loads are still expected to arrive shortly;
  • Is going to coordinate the distribution of education kits with IOCC (school kits), to make sure there will be no gaps;
