Job Description

Peterhouse, founded in 1284, is the oldest of the Cambridge Colleges. It has some 250undergraduate students and 110 graduate students. There are currently 22 Domestic Assistants and 3 Janitors in the Housekeeping team, and they work with other support from the Maintenance Department.

Job Title:Domestic Assistant

Hours:up to 20 core hours per week as agreed, with extra hours and occasional weekend duties as needed, paid as overtime

Salary:£7.85 per hour

General Area of Work:Undergraduate and Graduate Rooms, Fellows’ Sets, public areas throughout College

Responsible To:The College Housekeeper & Housekeeping Supervisors

Nature of the Post

To clean and provide a high quality housekeeping service for a designated set of rooms and common parts within the College or an associated College House. Off site houses are mainly in Warkworth Street and Parkside.

Duties and Responsibilities

During Academic Term
  1. To clean daily public areas, bathroom and gyp (kitchen) areas.
  2. Weekly, to clean all designated undergraduate student rooms to the standards defined by the College Housekeeper; to clean any designated graduate rooms whenever instructed by the College Housekeeper.
  3. When on duty, to change over and clean any designated guest rooms as necessary at weekends.
Out of Term/Conference Guests
  1. To clean daily public areas, bathroom and gyp (kitchen) areas.
  2. To make or change beds on a daily basis.
  3. To clean rooms daily to the standards specified by the College Housekeeper.
Other Duties
  1. To maintain all cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and secure manner to comply with COSHH regulations.
  2. To observe all fire regulations are maintained in the property.
  3. To immediately report any Health and Safety defects, faults, or matters of maintenance concern to the College Housekeeper.
  4. To act in the student’s best interest and report any matter of concern to the College Housekeeper.
  5. To report to the College Housekeeper if a student has not been seen for 48 hours.
  6. To assist in packing and sending dirty laundry (twice weekly or as necessary).
  7. Any other reasonable duties that may be required and that are compatible with the nature of the job.

Other Information

Holiday entitlement: - 25 days per annum with further 8 Bank Holidays and statutory days off (pro rata for part time staff).

Uniform provided.

Contributory pension scheme available after probationary period.

Peterhouse has a smoke free policy; smoking is not permitted in any College building, including off-site hostels, or in any of the courts. Smoking is only permitted in the designated smoking area.

Any necessary training (including COSHH) will be provided.
