Peter and Teresa Dessel Schissel Family
Peter Schissel Jr. came to America in 1844 with his parents Peter Sr. and Maria Neift Schissel. They settled in St. Mary, Pennsylvania. In 1856, Peter Jr. came to Winneshieck County, Iowa to a farm near Festina, Iowa. In 1875, he moved to a farm near Ossian, Iowa where he lived until his death.
Peter Schissel Jr. was born Jan. 6, 1837 at Bavaria Regensburg Germany. He was married to Theresa Dessel Jun 1st, 1870 in Festina, Iowa. She was born February 2, 1849 in Eppe, Waldech Germany. Peter's parents were both born in Bavaria, Germany. Peter and Theresa were very well thought of in their community. Peter and Theresa were Catholic and made their living farming. It was said that if anyone came to their house, they could not leave until Theresa served them lunch. Peter died May 3, 1912 in Ossian, Iowa. His death was attributed to old age. After his death, Theresa bought a home in Ossian, Iowa and lived there until her death July 27, 1919.
Her death was attributed to heart failure brought on by influenza. They are both buried in St. Francis de Sales Cemetery in Ossian, Iowa.
Theresa's parents were Heinrich Wilhelm Dessel and Marie Anna Figge Dessel. Theresa came to America in 1869. Theresa's parents were born in Eppe, Waldech Germany.

  1. Joseph A. Schissel was born on October 26, 1872 in Ossian, Iowa. He married Christina Duclos October 14, 1902 in St. Kilian, Minnesota. Christina was born October 15, 1883 in Festina, Iowa. Christina's parents were Anton and Barbara Rosenbaum Duclos. In 1891, Joseph moved from Ossian, Iowa to St. Cloud, Minnesota. He later worked at times with his brothers as a carpenter in The Iona Lake, Wilmont, Lismore and Adrian Minnesota areas. The last seven years of his life he spent the summers at the Bud Holtey Farm. He died March 7, 1953 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Al Lausted. Christine died September 11, 1923. They are both buried in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

At the age of 5, Richard went to live with his sister Irene because his mother had died. Richard graduated from South Milwaukee Heights in 1938. He went to work at Bacyrus Erie and stayed for 43 years and 3 months. He retired in 1983. He built large machines for stripping coal mines. Richard was in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945. He and Leatrice have a 50 ft trailer up north that they enjoy during the summer months. They now live in an apartment in Cudahy, Wisconsin.

They built many homes in Lismore, Adrian and Wilmont areas reaching the jobs by horse and buggy in the early years. When he lived in Wilmont, he walked to many of his jobs. He loved to argue politics. Barbara was a homemaker. William died November 22, 1944 in Worthington, Minnesota. He was buried in Lismore. Barbara died June 28, 1975 in St. Paul, Minnesota. She was buried in Lismore, Minnesota Catholic Cemetery. Barbara's parents were Anton and Barbara Rosenbaum Duclos.
  140. Stella Schissel was born May 15, 1907 in Lismore, Minnesota. She married Lawrence Gaudette November 27, 1929 in Lismore, Minnesota. Lawrence was born March 2, 1909. Lawrence was a gas truck driver. He loved to go hunting. Stella was a homemaker. She lost one of her arms in an accident. She somehow got her arm caught in a mangle while ironing clothes at the Deaf School in Fairbault, Minnesota. She still kept an immaculate house, made wonderful meals, did canning and baking. She always had coffee made and kept warm in a vacuum battle so when friends stopped by, they could have lunch. She had an artificial arm but did not always wear it at home because it bothered her. Stella died June 17, 1996 in a hospital in Maplewood, Minnesota. She was buried June 21, 1996 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
