PESS Approach to Teaching Dance.

Aim

To enhance the quality of teaching and learning in Dance

Objective

To make Dance activities accessible to both teachers and pupils by providing arrange of practical ideas to support the teaching of Dance including planning, delivery and assessment.

Outcomes

By the end of this course teachers should have a basic understanding of:

-the basic dance actions of travel, jump, turn, stillness and gesture

-progressive/developmental stages for the basic dance actions appropriate to this age phase

-RECIPE and how to apply this to lessons in order to develop quality sequences/motifs/phrases/dances

-composition and choreography in order to create sequences/motifs/phrases/dances

-using a dance framework to develop and plan dance ideas in response to a range of different stimuli

They should also be able to:

-appreciate and recognise different styles of dance including traditional dances

-develop a short dance phrase with a small group of pupils

-link dance to other areas of the National Curriculum

-identify how they might incorporate these ideas into existing practice

Course Outline

Session 1 -Introduction

Introduction to the PESS approach to teaching Dance. What is dance? , Why dance? Dance in the National Curriculum, Links to gymnastic activities

Session 2 -Exploring Basic Dance Actions

Basic Dance Actions specific for that phase or key stage. Exploring continuity and progression. Developing quality movement sequences/motifs/phrases/dances. Practical session. RECIPE explained to highlight the importance of exploration, creativity, performance and evaluation in Dance lessons. Use RECIPE to plan lessons.

Session 3 – Responding to Stimuli

Responding to stimuli, creating sequences/motifs/phrases and dances. Practical session

Session 4 – Making Dances

Making Dances. Using simple composition and choreographic structures. Making links to literacy. Practical session.

Using a story board approach to plan dances to be undertaken in a unit of work. Planning over a longer period of time.

Session 5 – Quality Learning & Teaching

Identifying quality teaching & learning using ‘Bingo Cards’. Making links to other areas of the curriculum including music, art, science,etc. and the skills framework.

Session 6 – Working with pupils

Using the ideas from the making dances session, teachers will have the opportunity to experience two consecutive lessons with a small group of pupils and work with the course tutors to develop a short dance.

Session 7 – Using a Dance Framework

Eventually interactive planning tool to help teachers consider all the necessary aspects for successful dance planning.

Session 8 – Quality teaching & Learning

Assessment

Session 9 - Resource overview

To familiarise the teachers with the resource.

Session 10 – Plenary

To consider how these ideas can be integrated into existing practice.
