Description: Students plan, organize, and present an effective argument and assume a point of view that may be different from their own-- writing, presentations, and performance task

Classroom Component: This task is designed to follow any unit on "Persuasion" or "Argument". Because students draw on their own experiences and perceptions, this task is easy to implement. Still, the task requires students to plan, organize, and present an effective argument and assume a point of view that may be different from their own. Prerequisite Knowledge: Students know

  • how to develop and state a topic clearly
  • the types of support for arguments
  • techniques such as tone and imagery to develop a strong introduction and conclusion
  • how to draw conclusions
  • how to evaluate, revise and/or edit first drafts
  • the basic concept of "integrity"
  • how to write and speak using standard English

Academic Integrity: Students examine the concept of integrity in the classroom. They assume a role or point of view from which to evaluate behavior. Although this activity is focused on recognizing academic integrity, the task does not evaluate whether or not students practice academic integrity in their own work. It does, however, give students a chance to examine the concept and form some opinions about classroom behavior. Context: You are a college professor addressing the problem of students plagiarizing their work. Prompt: Write and deliver a persuasive speech to convince students’ academic integrity in completing their assignments. Product: Oral Presentation Rubric: Includes focus on subject, use of persuasive techniques, use of standard English, support for opinions, a call for action, a consideration for time allotted.
