PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT

1. PURPOSE

DUS conducts many of its activities in the field where the risk of personal injury is increased. The following outlines the required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) to be used when working in these areas. The correct and proper uses of these PPE items can and will significantly reduce the risk of serious harm.

2. SCOPE

The following applies to all DUS staff working in the field, whether on active mine sites, exploration leases or other fieldwork. Please note that whilst these requirements are necessary for all DUS staff, our clients may have additional requirements. In such situations DUS staff must abide by the clients policy as well.

3.RESPONSIBILITIES

It is the responsibility of the DUS Operations Manager/Director to ensure all DUS staff are supplied with the necessary PPE outlined below, and to ensure it is being correctly used. DUS Field Staff must ensure that this PPE is used correctly, and when required.

4.1 Hearing Protection

The company supplies hearing protection for all employees. Ear muffs and plugs can be obtained from your supervisor.

If you are working in an area where you feel the noise level is bothering you, use hearing protection. The noise level changes in the shop depending on the job, protect your self by using hearing protection.

Any person operating a hand grinder or large impact tools must use hearing protection. Cotton does not serve as an adequate hearing protection. Be sure to get the proper fit on the earplugs.

Alert your co-workers in your area if you are going to be generating a noise level above the normal workplace level so they can also be prepared to use hearing protection.

4.2 Eye Protection

The company supplies safetyglasses for all employees. They can be obtained from your supervisor.

Safety glasses with side shields are required by every employee, customer or visitor entering any area that exposes the eye to hazards from flying particles.

A face shield and safety glasses with side shields must be used when doing grinding of any type or when using wire wheel buffers.

Face shields and goggles should be cleaned after use.

Damaged face shield and goggles will be removed from services and replaced by a good set immediately.

A welding helmet with tinted face shield and safety glasses with side shields must be worn when welding to protect eyes from light, sparks and radiation.

4.3 Foot Protection

Safety boots must be worn by employees working at any mine site and in areas where there is a risk of injury from falling objects or objects piercing the sole or where employee’s feet are exposed to electrical or environmental hazards.

All field employees must wear steel-capped safety boots at work.

4.4 Head Protection

Hard hats must be worn in areas where there is a potential for injury to the head from falling objects. Employees working in warehouse areas where the overhead racks are over 9 feet high must wear hard hats when stocking racks or pulling parts from racks.

Field service employees working in areas where there is an electrical hazard or danger from falling objects must wear a hard hat. If customer policy requires a hard hat, employees must follow the customer policy for all personal protective equipment.

4.5 Hand Protection

The company supplies suitable gloves for all employees. They can be obtained from your supervisor

Employees must wear gloves for protection against cuts, burns and crushing injuries. Gloves should also be worn to protect against chemicals (i.e. cleaning products) used in parts washing and when pumping fuel.

If not being worn, then gloves should still be carried on your person.

4.6 Dust Protection

When working in areas where there are high levels of dust being generated i.e. around drill rig. DUS staff are required to wear dust masks, as supplied by DUS management. You may also be required to wear masks at other times as stated by the client.

If you are concerned about the dust levels in an area try to limit the area to necessary work and use your PPE.

If you still have concerns about dust levels, especially in high risk areas (i.e. uranium exploration leases, areas where asbestos is prevalent) contact the DUS Operations Manager immediately.

4.7 Radiation Monitoring

Any DUS staff required to work with logging tools utilising a radioactive source will be supplied with a personal radiation monitoring badge. Monitors shall be supplied by ARPANSA and shall be worn for a period of 12 weeks, after which they will be returned to the ARPANSA laboratory to be analysed.

The Logging Engineers and support staff required to wear such monitors shall not return their personal monitors to the Radiation Safety Officer until they have received a replacement. Further information on working specifically with radioactive sources see the Radiation Safety Procedure (DOC 007)
