ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE: SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT LIST

PERSONAL BACKPACK EQUIPMENT LIST

Pack large enough to carry the following items:

·  Pair of Mountain snowshoes (supplied by Scout group)

·  Camera (personal choice)

·  Microspikes or crampons

·  2 x carabineers / straps (To attach Microspikes and Snow Shoes to the outside of your pack)

·  whistle (attached to outside of pack)

·  Personal survival kit – containing

o  striker/butane lighter/matches

o  multi tool/knife (with can opener element)

o  Small 1st Aid Kit

o  compass and map of specific hiking route

·  headlamp (with spare batteries)

·  rope (for making an emergency shelter)

·  small piece of tarp or garbage bag (for sitting on and for making an emergency shelter)

·  sunglasses or ski goggles (in case of high wind on Mountain summit)

·  Vaseline or other lip balm (protection against cold and high wind)

·  extra waterproof mittens

·  extra non-cotton sweater

·  extra non-cotton socks

·  extra hat and/or balaclava

·  neck warmer

·  Moleskin or duct tape (in case of blisters or repairs to clothing/equipment)

·  Toilet tissue and Ziploc bag (Leave No Trace - pack it in, pack it out)

·  Spare shoe laces (in case boot laces break)

·  Food / Meal items

o  Small portable light weight stove (may buddy up with another Venturer if you wish)

o  Fuel canister

o  Lighter / Matches (See personal kit list)

o  Lunch

o  Ditty bag

o  Can opener (if needed)

o  Snacks for eating on hike (NO apples, bananas, eggs – they freeze in cold weather)

o  Water (2 x 1 liter bottles) or a bladder system (with insulated hose)

·  For the stay at the Motel

o  Toilet gear

o  Pajamas

o  Spare set of shoes / trainers (for wearing at the Motel)


LEADER PERSONAL BACKPACK EQUIPMENT LIST

All of the above plus the following

·  Small saw (in case of need to cut down trees for emergency stretcher)

·  Extra pair of water proof gloves

·  Extra toques

·  Spare shoe laces

·  Extra ski-goggles

·  Spare maps in Ziploc bags

·  Spare fuel canisters

·  As a group, we will carry: extra emergency shelter and extra throw bag/sleeping bag for emergencies

LEADER “ADIRONDACK ADVENTURE BACKPACK”

VAF will supply a “backpack” kit with the following items for each hiking group:

·  First aid kits

·  Throw bag (for rescuing someone from a spruce trap)

·  Sam splint

·  Maps

·  Repair kit for snowshoes

·  Compass

·  VAF is providing a SPOT unit for emergency communication


CLOTHING REQUIREMENTS FOR WINTER HIKING

·  Base layer (Long sleeve T-shirt, long johns)

·  Mid-layer (fleece jacket)

·  Light weight Hiking pants and jacket

·  Waterproof layer (top & bottom)

·  Wool socks

·  Hat, neck warmer, balaclava

·  Goggles and / or sunglasses

·  hiking poles (personal choice)

·  waterproof gaiters (personal choice)

·  Waterproof mittens (2 pairs) and liners

·  Ankle high boots for hiking

·  two(2) plastic bags (to wear over socks in case of leaks)
