HIGH SCHOOL COACH

JOB DESRIPTION

I.  Reports to: Assistant Principal in Charge of Athletics and Athletic Director

II.  Supervises: Athletes

III. Basic Function: To carry out the aims of the L.A.U.S. D. Athletic

Program and the Administrator assigned to Athletics of Maywood Academy.

IV. Primary Responsibilities:

A.  Year Round

1.  Have understanding knowledge of rules and regulations regarding his/her

Sport as presented in the CIF Los Angeles City Section Handbook.

2.  Keep abreast of new knowledge, innovative ideas, and techniques by

attendance at workshops, clinics, and reading in your field.

3.  Attend all required coaches meeting. Failure to attend meeting is

automatic suspension from first game of the season.

B.  Seasonal

1.  Before the season.

a.  Assist the Athletic Director in making systematic issuance of school

equipment and keep a written log of such equipment.

b.  Assist Athletic Director in providing accurate information needed to

compile eligibility list and other reports.

c.  Keep a written time log of dates and hours of screening athletes.

Do not exceed 20 hour limit as stated by L.A.U.S.D. CITY SECTION.

C.  During the Season

a. Implement “Athletic Standards” as outlined by CIF City Section.

b.  Assume responsibility for constant care for equipment and facilities

being used.

c.  Assume supervisory control over athletes and teams assigned and to

d.  To be regular attendance at all practice sessions and contest.

e.  Apply discipline in a firm and positive manner.

f.  Emphasize safety precautions and be aware of best training and injury

procedures.

g.  Conduct himself/herself and his teams in an ethical manner during

practice and contest.

h.  Provide Athletic Director with information needed in making game

reports and publicity.

i.  Instruct his/her players concerning rules and rule changes, new

knowledge and innovative ideas and techniques.

3. End of Season

a. Assist in return and inventory of school equipment and uniforms.

b. Recommend athletes for letter awards.

c. Recommend facility maintenance and improvements.

d. Recommend equipment purchase.

e. Return of all keys signed out.

4.  Qualifications for the position of Head Coach

A.  Professional preparation: employment as a teacher with coaching

preparation either experience or college preparation. All coaches must have a current CPR and first Aid Certification card.

B.  Background experience: posses working knowledge of all aspects of the

Sport.

C.  Personal: demonstrate interest in and an aptitude for performing aspects

of the sport.

1.  Always display good sportsmanship, losing or winning.

2.  Maintain self poise and self control at all times, especially at the contest.

3.  Teach team to play fairly.

4.  Be a good host to the visiting team, coach and spectators.

5.  Educate the players on the sidelines to the fact that it is unsportsmanlike conduct to yell intimidating remarks at the visiting team or officials.

6.  Respect the officials’ judgment and interpretation of the rules. If an

interpretation appeal is necessary, follow appropriate procedures.

7.  Let the official control the game and the coach control his or her team.

8.  Publicly attempt to shake hands with the officials prior to the game and opposing coach before and after the game.

9. Enforce school rules at all times (dress code, electronic devices, etc.).
