Job purpose
Provide a library service during evenings, weekends and bank holidays, monitoring the self-issue system, library security, giving user support, maintaining use of library equipment and other facilities and undertaking shelving and other library processing activities
Key accountabilities/primary responsibilities / % Time /
1.  / Ensure (in liaison with Security Staff) that the library is open at the advertised time and fully functional e.g. lights and equipment are switched on and at the end of service the library is closed. Similarly ensure all windows are secure and doors are locked and lights and equipment are switched off and the Library is tidy. / 10%
2.  / Provide support in the use of the self-issue system. / 5%
3.  / Provide basic support to the Library meeting rooms / 5%
4.  / Implement health and safety and emergency procedures when required. / 1%
5.  / Monitor the security of the library including the book security system and respond when necessary. / 9%
6.  / Answer basic directional enquiries to help users understand the Library's services and facilities and help to locate materials. / 10%
7.  / Collect and shelve returned material and library stock on the return shelves and tables. / 10%
8.  / Ensure that stock is in good order on the shelves by regular tidying. / 10%
9.  / Maintain library equipment and help users to operate it / 10%

Lone working
The Service Assistant is required to be present in the library throughout their shift. (a member of security staff can be called to cover short periods for a comfort break)
Punctuality and reliability to operate lone working service in the hours advertised
Ability to cover other shifts at short notice eg. in case of illness.
Ability to do manual handling within health and safety guidelines in relation to library stock and equipment. /
