Mission:Security Operations holds the primary responsibility for ensuring the security and protection of the British Museum (BM) premises, staff and visitors and the collections. It also has the lead role in the implementation of the Emergency Management and Business Recovery Plans. This applies 24 hours per day, 7 days per week throughoutthe year. In conjunction with the Visitor Operations staff, Security Operations personnel provide the “public face” of the BM and, through their professionalism and personal conduct, enhance the quality of the visitor experience by creating a safe and secure environment. The actions of the Security Department underpin the work of the other BM departments and enable the Museum to deliver its objectives withoutcompromising the security of the premises, people or collections. It is crucial that all security staff carry out their duties professionally, diligently and in a proactive, polite manner, at all times ensuring that the collection and site(s) remain intact and unharmed. It is the responsibility of the managers to provide the resources and create an environment which enables the warding team to undertake these duties to the highest standards, whilst being proactive in the drive to contribute to the Operations Department’s philosophy of continuous improvement.
Main purpose of Job:
- Lead, manage and develop the day to day Security operation for the BritishMuseum. This to include developing security solutions, carrying-out security reviews/audits on current procedures ( both Museum general and specific )
- In conjunction with the Head of Security develop and maintain the Emergency and Business and Disaster Recovery Plans
- Lead and manage security personnel relating to the security day and night operation teams ( 108 staff Band ranges SD 2 to M2 )
- Attend weekly event meeting, including liaison with managers organising works and events on the Main site.

- Prepare, develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures for all areas of responsibility
- Overseeing all security requirements for VIP visitors to site
- Oversee operational security requirements for major events
- Act as Incident Controller Silver
- Deputy to Head of Security
- Audit departmental performance through procedure documentation.
Key Responsibilities [in order of priority]:
- In accordance with BM Security, Health and Safety at Work Act Policies, and HR policy act as Line Manager for the Senior Managers in charge of Day Operations and Night Operations Responsibilities include:
Management of absence, appraisal, annual leave, grievance, disciplinary, welfare etc.
Authorise and assess all overtime payments
- Oversee 24/7 Security operation for site :
Liaising with all staff holdingevents, works and other activities from outside bodies carried out on the Main site
Security Stakeholder for all major events or work projects
- Develop and Maintain the Emergency and Business Recovery Plans
- Review and revise BM Security Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Manage all investigations and develop meaningful crime reports, statistics and analysis for management information reports.
- Comply with BM Security, Health and Safety at Work Act Policies.
- Act as BM Silver Incident Controller
- Attend management meetings, brief staff
- Undertake other management tasks as required.
What are the main work pressures and challenges?
- Managing 24/7 security operation working with Managers working Day and Night shifts.
- Developing a properly motivated, resourced and trained team which operates effectively with all BM departments and Emergency Services to agreed standards.
- Liaising with all Museum departments over all issue concerning 24 /7 operations on site
- Identification, development of a security structure which support the needs of the Museum and it’s visitors

Person Specification
Essential / DesirableEducation – levels& subjects / A Level standard minimum, ideally in English, Mathematics.
Other qualifications / Degree, diploma or NVQ in management. / Suitable qualifications in:
Security eg SIA.
Cultural heritage/customer care.
Specifictechnical/
professionalskills & experience / Risk assessment for security issues.
Emergency and Business Recovery planning experience
