INTRODUCTION
PerryCountySchool District# 32 is located in the rural community of Perry County, Missouri in the southeast region of the state. PerryCounty is bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and the lead mines of Iron and BollingerCounties on the west. The French influence of Ste. Genevieve is to the north and the rolling hills of PerryCounty soon turn into the flatlands of the Bootheel just south of the county line in Cape GirardeauCounty. PerryCountySchool District# 32 is the largest K-12 school system in PerryCounty and serves 2,281 students in an EarlyChildhoodCenter, Elementary School, Middle School, High School, and Career and TechnologyCenter. The school buildings are in close proximity on a 116 acre plot of land six blocks from the town square of Perryville.
PerryCounty absorbs students enrolled in a K-12 public school system and four parochial K-8 school systems. The district enrolls 47.2 % of its students in the free and reduced lunch program (FRLP) compared to the state average of 43.7%. The average daily attendance is 94.4 % compared to the state average of 95.1%. The current expenditure per ADA is $7,790.00 and the state average is $10,019.00.
The major employers in the community are manufacturing, timber industry, agriculture, and health and social services. Some of the larger businesses located in the school district are TGMissouri, Gilster-Marylee, East Perry Lumber, Sabreliner, Perry County Memorial Hospital, and Perry County School District #32.
PerryCountySchool District #32 realizes that we are in the midst of a rapidly changing age. Never in the history of mankind has technology and information processing changed so quickly. We realize we need to help students acquire the skills necessary for 21st Century learning. We believe that technology is not an end to itself. It is a powerful educational tool available to students and staff in our school district. Technology is an important resource to accomplish our prime goal as a school district,student learning and achievement.
TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE
The technology committee of PerryCountySchool District# 32 is charged with the responsibility of developing a new technology plan for our district. This plan will provide guidance to the school and community to increase student achievement, drive instruction, manage district tasks and communications, distribute resources equitably, and strengthen all the areas technology encompasses in the district and community. This committee has developed a plan, which will be approved by the Board of Education in the spring of 2010. It will then be submitted to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for approval. The plan is written for a three-year period with annual reviews and revisions. The members serving on the committee are from the different populations served by PerryCountySchool District# 32. Members of the committee represent the Board of Education, administration, certified staff, classified staff, students, parents, higher education, and business/community leaders in the district. In writing the district’s technology plan the committee will model the district’s CSIP Goals and the Missouri Education Technology Strategic Plan’s five Technology Focus Areas (TFAs) identified by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. PerryCountySchool District #32
Mission Statement: Through a partnership of school, family and community, we will provide a learning environment that facilitates the lifelong learning skills for students by recognizing each student’s unique gifts to pursue personal goals, character development and academic achievement necessary for a productive and healthy life.
Local Needs: During 2006-2009 the following data sources were collected and analyzed in the development of thedistrict’s local needs as they are related to the five CSIP goals. Data sources include: district technology plan, district assessments, state assessment (MAP), national assessments, local surveys, core data, professional development, vertical teams meetings, technology committee meetings, professional learning communities, district policies, financial, state and national standards, data network, and inventories.
Through a joint conjuncture of the technology and CSIP committees and after thorough analysis of the data sources a list of needs follow. It has been concluded that the technology plan address these needs to ensure that the students attendingPerry County School District #32 are prepared to be 21st century learners and model community members.
Goal 1: Student Performance
- Ensure that the district’s curriculums are research-based and include daily technology integration, inquiry-based instruction, the NETS*S, and Grappling’s “Technology and Learning Spectrum”.
- Utilize technology resources to increase student achievement.
- Develop a tool to assess technology literacy at 4th and 8th grades.
Goal 2: Highly Qualified Staff
- Implement and expand focused, quality professional development that will assist teachers to develop skills necessary to implement a technology-enriched curriculum.
- Provide appropriate resources to promote inquiry-based instructional strategies.
Goal 3: Facilities, Support and Instructional Resources
- Provide and maintain the necessary resources/equipment to support quality instruction and student learning.
Goal 4: Parent and Community Involvement
- Expand communications to involve parents and the community in the educational process of our children.
Goal 5: Governance
- Establish technology protocols to ensure efficiency throughout the district.
- Establish and maintain funding for hardware/software and adequate technology personnel.
Goal 1: The district will develop and enhance quality education and instructional programs to improve student performance and enable students to meet personal, academic, and career goals.
Objective 1: By 2013, technology will be embedded and fully integrated into 100% of the district’s curriculum to promote 21st Century learning through research-based and inquiry-based strategies for all students.
