North West Perinatal and Paediatric Clinical HIV Network Workshop

1.INTRODUCTION

The 3rdNorth West Perinatal and Paediatric Clinical HIV Network Workshop was held in the picturesque setting of Keele Hall, University of Keele, Stoke on Trent on Thursday 10 May 2007. The event was generously sponsored by Abbott, Boehringer-Ingelheim, Bristol Myers Squib, Gilead Medical and GlaxoSmithKlineandfacilitated by the North West Perinatal and Paediatric HIV Clinical Network Core Group.(For Core Group contact details please refer to Appendix A). The workshop was organised by Cheshire and Merseyside Specialised Commissioning Team (now the North West Specialised Commissioning Team).

Dr Paddy McMaster, Consultant Paediatric Intensivist from University Hospital of North Staffordshire NHS Trust chaired the morning session, and Dr Toni Tan, Consultant Paediatrician at NorthManchester GeneralHospital, chaired the afternoon session. (Please refer to Appendix B for the programme).

The workshop was well represented with approximately 60 delegates in total. Attending were representatives from a number of health professionals with clinical, nursing and commissioning backgrounds as well as pleasingly high representation from the voluntary sector. (Please refer to list of delegates attached in Appendix C).

2.AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

At the start of the day Dr Paddy McMaster asked all the delegates to identify their aspirations for the day. Some of those identified were:

3.PRESENTATIONS

Please refer to copies of the speaker’s profiles in Appendix D. The speaker presentations can be found in the separate attachments, which accompany this report.

4.ROUND TABLE DISCUSSIONS

Following the success of last year’s round table discussions, delegates were again given a number of scenarios to discuss in small groups. Details of the scenarios can be found in Appendix E. The discussion provoked lively debates from a range of issues and delegates commented on how useful it was to hear the opinions of a range of professionals.

5.SEMINAR EVALUATION

Approximately 60 delegates (including speakers) attended. Of those attending, 41 completed and returned the evaluation form. Feedback received regarding the presentations was overall excellent. Specific comments received for each presentation are as follows:

6.FUTURE MEETINGS

It is hoped that these educational workshops will continue to take place on a yearly basis. Delegates were asked if they had any other topic suggestions for future events. Comments provided are as follows:

  1. ROLE OF THE NETWORK

Delegates were asked to suggest areas in which the network can provide support. Reported areas were:

Training issues for ‘outlying hospitals’

Feedback to hospitals from specialist centres on the outcome of pregnancies

Engagement with commissioners

Producing unified guidelines

Involvement of primary care

8.GENERAL FEEDBACK

The majority of delegates had described the whole day as inspiring, worthwhile, educational, stimulating, thought provoking, interesting, focussed and good for networking. Delegates were also very pleased by the lovely venue and excellent food. During the afternoon session the identified aspirations for the day were revisited, delegates reported that the majority of these had been met. Others were noted by the network and listed for future meetings.

Appendix D

SPEAKER PROFILES

Dr Paddy McMaster(Morning Chair)

Dr Paddy McMaster is the Consultant Paediatrician with a Specialist Interest in Paediatric Infectious Diseases at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire in Stoke on Trent. He is responsible for the medical care of the children with HIV, the children born to mothers with HIV and for advice about testing children for HIV in North Staffordshire and referrals from Shropshire and the north of the West Midlands. His training included a year as a Fellow in Infectious Diseases in Sydney and two years in Papua New Guinea, which often proves useful in Stoke!

Dr Toni Tan (Afternoon Chair)

Dr Tan has been in his current post since February 2002. He is a general paediatrician with interest in HIV, Respiratory Medicine and Neonatology. He is also the Lead Paediatric HIV Consultant for Greater Manchester. His hobbies include SCUBA Diving, Ballroom dancing and he is an avid Liverpool fan!

Cathryn Benson

Nurse Specialist in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital. Hobbies include, watching Liverpool Football Club and listening to Take That !

Magda Conway

Magda has coordinated the Children and Young People HIV Network at the National Children’s Bureau for 4 years. She is author of HIV in Schools (NCB 2004); Developing support services for children, young people and families living with HIV (NCB 2006); Children, HIV, Asylum and Immigration (2006). Prior to this Magda ran a regional teenage pregnancy project across East Sussex, worked for East Sussex, Brighton & Hove Health Promotion both in HIV prevention and sexual health, ran a Community Development Project and worked as a youth worker.
