Running a public access television station involves many different talents that are developed by students interested in the fine and performing arts. To give students a feel of what it is like to be both in front of and behind the camera,
we will bring one of the video cameras so that students can look through the viewfinder, practice moving (panning) the camera on a tripod, and then also our computerized "non-linear" videotape editing system so they can see it in action and do a quick edit or two. / /

Week 2: The Reasons Why People Want to Act

Hosted at: AdamsCounty Economic Development

12050 Pecos Street, Ste. 200

Westminster, CO 80234

This program introduces students to the reasons that people want to act (in spite of daunting odds that one will meet with financial success or even be cast in interesting work)- because it is fun, challenging, even exhilarating; because the world loves entertainment, and because acting teaches us so much about human behavior, human history, and human performances of self and society. After an introductory, participatory lecture, students will experience one or two acting exercises to demonstrate the kinds of learning experiences that might characterize a professional training program. The final portion of the evening will be a talk-through of the business aspects of creating and managing an acting career, including commercial paths, alternative paths, and artistic/socially-conscious path. / / ]

Week 3: A Life in the Theatre

Hosted at: AdamsCounty Economic Development

12050 Pecos Street, Ste. 200

Westminster, CO 80234

This program provides an overview of what it takes to have a career in the theatre, on stage and behind the scenes. From acting to directing to designing and building sets and costumes, all areas of the theatre will be explored and discussed. Students will discover that there are many more career options out there for theatre than just performing and, more importantly, that theatre is a collaborative art and business.
We will start the session by discussing the various types of careers that can be had in theatre today and what it takes to achieve them. We will take four or five of these careers and delve deeper into the steps that are needed to meet the goals of attaining those careers.
As a hands-on activity we will split into groups with each group presenting a part of the theatre, i.e. set design, costumes, actors, lighting, etc. After a simple description of a play, the groups will discuss amongst themselves and explore how they will fulfill that concept through their work. This will demonstrate the collaboration of ideas and people needed to accomplish a successful production. / /
