Performance Analysis Writing Frame

Guidance

  • 150-200wordsfor each criterion(quality over quantity) approx. 3600 total, as a guide
  • The headings you need to include are in blue – these are already on the InDesign worksheet. Once finished, re-read andedit. Be clear, concise and don’t waffle.

Nb. Your research has to be useful and relevant to the client’s needs

Performance Analysis

Each criterion should contain more than one piece of information that is fully justified:Jade (#00A86B). For example it is not enough to say the material chosen is polystyrene, you need to justify the statement with a reason: because it is tough and can be injection moulded.

You must do an analysis of two existing and similar products and compare them.It is important to pick two pieces of packaging that are different: card and plastic. You also need 4 quality photos of yourself disassembling each piece of packaging. You must write to the criteria below:

Form

Why is the packaging shaped/styled as it is?

  • Shape
  • Style
  • Pattern
  • Colour
  • Access
  • Storage – tray, drawer, sections, compartments
  • Texture
  • Size

eg. It is a cuboid form with a flat base and a hinged lidfor access. The box has two layers of chocolates separated by a corrugated card, adding strength and protection. The chocolates have a variety of forms that will appeal to the consumer. The box is gold in colour to give it a sense of luxury and high quality…

Function (what it does)

What is the purpose of the packaging?

  • Protect
  • Promote
  • Stacking and storage
  • Preserve
  • How it works

eg. A layer of shrink wrap is added to make the box air tight and preserve the chocolates. The plastic used for the chocolate is inert and hygienic and will not react with the product…

User Requirements

What qualities make the box attractive to potential users/customers?

  • How it meets the needs of the user
  • Who is the target market?
  • Any special features?
  • Are aspects necessary or luxury?

eg. The packaging meets the needs of the user by including… The packaging is clearly aimed at…

The packaging is ergonomically sound--designed to fit well in to the hand--and the lid is easy to open and close. The box has a modern look that will appeal to the target market as a luxurious icon of their lifestyle and would make an attractive gift…

Performance Requirements inc Sustainability (how does it do it)

What are the technical considerations that must be achieved within the product?

  • How well it performs as packaging
  • How is it Secure
  • Well-proportioned etc, etc
  • How does it provide Access and security
  • In terms of the environment – how well does it perform…is it made out of recycled or recyclable materials etc

eg. The walls of the box are folded to give a greater thickness, which will give the chocolates better protection from impact: the box will be more rigid. The materials used are hygienic, clean, strong and tough, meaning the chocolates are fit for consumption…

Materials & Component Requirements inc Sustainability

How should the materials and components perform within the packaging?

  • Technical needs of materials, eco issues, durability, aesthetics, etc
  • The structure of the box: walls, floors, lid and drawers, etc.
  • Materials used: are they eco-friendly/sustainable and durable, etc.
  • Why these materials?ie advantages and implications: Wood/Paper/Card implies harmony with nature, plastic and metal imply functionality…
  • Are the materials sustainable?

eg. The box is made from Solid Bleached Board (SBB), a type of cartonboard, as it can be easily cut and folded and printed on…The surface graphics are printed using Offset lithography as this gives a high quality finish and is ideal for the high volume of production

Scale of Production & Cost

How does the design allow for scale of production and what are the considerations for determining cost?

  • One off or batch?
  • Budget/economics

eg. This box has gold printing,to suggest high quality, and this will be expensive. It will be a high scale of production, which will offset the cost of setting up manufacture ie. making die-cutting and vacuum forming moulds…

ANALYSIS

Each criterion requires approx. 150-200 words of analysis where you need to review your case studies, and create concise comparisons. Next, you need to Identify contrasting/similar needs

Form

  • Compare/contrast: Differences and similarities and how they affect the packaging

eg. Case study one has a distinct, aggressive form giving it a more robust aesthetic than case study 2, which is more subtle.

  • Needs identified /// Needs of your packaging

Eg. Case study one, needs a robust linear style in order to suit the target market /// My packaging will need a natural form due to its audience, perhaps closer to that of two Case Study 2
