We’re assuming chewing gum has two components – gum and sugar. The sugar will dissolve when the gum is chewed therefore leaving behind only gum.

Question: What is the percent composition of sugar in chewing gum?

Prediction: What percent of chewing gum do you think is sugar?

Procedure:

1.  You will be given a piece of gum

2.  Get into groups of 4 – 5

3.  Weigh unwrapped gum (put on a piece of paper towel)

4.  Chew your gum for approximately 10 minutes

5.  Weigh chewed gum (put on same piece of paper towel

Analysis:

1.  Calculate the mass of sugar present in gum.

2.  Calculate the percent composition of sugar in gum.

3.  Would a dentist recommend chewing gum? Why or why not. (Use results of your lab for evidence)

4.  Would changing the number of pieces of gum change the results of the lab? Why or why not.

Write up should include predictions, data table and analysis questions with all calculations.
