People make their native places famous. Nottingham is a city the East Midlands region of the United Kingdom. Nottingham receives around 300,000 overseas visitors each year. Many visitors are attracted by Nottingham's nightlife and shops, by its history, and by the legend of Robin Hood.

Sherwood Forest is home to the famous Major Oak which, according to local folklore, was Robin Hood's principal hideout. The oak tree is between 800 and 1,000 years old. The Major Oak was featured on the 2005 BBC TV programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the natural wonders of the Midlands. Sherwood attracts 500,000 tourists annually, including many from around the world.

The park hosts the annual Robin Hood Festival for a week each summer. This event recreates a medieval atmosphere and features the major characters from the Robin Hood legend. The week's entertainment includes jousters and strolling players, dressed in medieval clothes. One can enjoy performances with musicians, rat-catchers, alchemists and fire eaters.

Lichfield is notable not only for its three-spired cathedral but it is known as the birthplace of Samuel Johnson, the writer of the first authoritative Dictionary of the English Language. He was born September, 18 1709 and died aged 75. Samuel Johnson was an English famous essayist, lexicographer, biographer and a poet. He had been working on his dictionary for 9 years. It was finally published in April 1755. It was a huge book. Its pages were nearly 18 inches (46 cm) tall, and the book was 20 inches (51 cm) wide when opened; it contained 42,773 entries. The Dictionary brought Johnson popularity and success.

Lancaster is the county town of Lancashire, England. Among the long list of names of notable Lancastrians is the name of Myles Standish (1584 - 1656) Soldier-Captain Passenger on The Mayflower, Founding member of the Plymouth Colony (US). Standish played a leading role in the administration and defense of Plymouth Colony from its beginning. On February 17, 1621, the Plymouth Colony militia elected him as its first commander and continued to re-elect him to that position for the remainder of his life. He was also one of the first settlers and founders of the town of Duxbury, Massachusetts. Standish, Maine and Standish, Michigan are named for the Captain as well as the neighborhood of Standish, Minneapolis.
