Other information helpful to understand size/scope of job: / As part of the Rehabilitation and Wellbeing team (within the Starlight Centre),the post holder works as part of a multi professional team with the main aim to optimise wellbeing and quality of life. The post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating the existing complementary therapies as well as developing and broadening the scope of activities to improve body image, self-esteem and confidence.
The service provision is to patients and their carers across the in-patient and outpatient services with some outreach work
Some flexibility in working days required to meet the needs of the service
The post holder will be based at Peace Hospice Care but will be required to work collaboratively with other palliative care providers.

Job Summary:

¨  To communicate and work closely with the Voluntary Services Manager in recruiting, managing and developing a team of volunteers to provide wellbeing and complementary therapy within the hospice, ensuring the volunteer policy is adhered to

¨  To develop the existing service and widen the range of interventions on offer to incorporate aspects of wellbeing such as colour workshops, improving body image workshops, makeup advice

¨  To develop a resource folder and build relationships with the local community offering services such as hairdressing and wig advice

¨  To undertake specific project work that supports agreed service developments

¨  To raise awareness of the benefits of complementary therapies to all patient facing services

¨  To address issues of quality, training, audit and national and local standards of the Complementary Therapy service.

¨  To maintain stock of aromatherapy oils and other requirements for the complementary therapy team

Duties and Responsibilities

Professional Practice

1.  As part of the starlight centre multi-disciplinary team ensure patients/carers and families holistic needs are assessed and a clear plan of treatment is in place

2.  Ensure an effective pathway is developed to maintain the flow of patients

3.  To continue to expand the range of traditional touch therapies and develop the service to include a wider range of wellbeing therapies such as colour styling, skin care and make up, hair and wigs

4.  To pro-actively contribute to the ongoing assessment of the patient and carer’s needs, reporting back to the community multi-disciplinary meeting.

5.  To ensure timely and accurate completion of electronic records in accordance with existing practice and procedure at Peace Hospice Care are completed. To be aware of the legal requirements associated with keeping such records

6.  To lead the provision of a wide range of therapeutic interventions and evidence based practice to meet the patients, families and carers wellbeing needs ensuring these are put into practice.

7.  To ensure the control, supply and storage of supplies such as oils, creams, talc and clean laundry

8.  To ensure practice is in accordance with Peace Hospice Care policy at all times and to be aware of the Peace Hospice Care philosophy and Code of conduct

Managerial

1.  To manage and prioritise referrals and co-ordinate the allocation of volunteer complementary therapists to various clinical areas according to need

2.  To manage and develop a team of volunteers to work within the complementary therapy team and expand the service to incorporate general wellbeing interventions.

3.  To manage and prioritise referrals and co-ordinate the allocation of volunteer complementary therapists to various clinical areas according to need.

4.  To lead on new initiatives and developments as the service expands

5.  To lead the development of policies and protocols for complementary therapies within the hospice and participate in the development of the hospice clinical governance and quality framework

6.  To liaise and build relationships with local community resources and other hospice Complementary Therapy Co-ordinators.

7.  To be a part of the Rehabilitation and Wellbeing team working closely with the other members of the team and support the Starlight centres development and projects as required

8.  To provide support and supervision to the team of volunteers and volunteer complementary therapists by regular communication and individual support as necessary, including an annual training day.

9.  To maintain, with the Volunteer Services Co-ordinator current details of insurance and qualifications of all qualified complementary therapists at the Hospice.

10.  To ensure practice in complementary therapy is evidence based and encourage the use of research in further development of clinical practise.

11.  To fully understand the organisational structure of Peace Hospice Care and foster good working relationships between department

12.  To collect, collate and analyse statistical data as required

EDUCATION – personal development

1.  To educate the multidisciplinary team on the role of complementary and wellbeing therapies to enable the team to make appropriate referrals to the service.

2.  To provide support, teaching and advice to clinical staff on complementary therapies.

3.  To provide both formal and informal teaching opportunities, contributing to the protected learning time sessions and other education services when required

4.  To maintain own registration through continuing professional development.

5.  To organise training for volunteers in palliative care and the use of complementary therapies in palliative care.

6.  To support the Starlight team in the supervision, induction and management of new staff, volunteers and students.

7.  Quality and audit:

to undertake audits as required

to attend regular supervision

Professional

1.  To maintain membership of the National Association of Complementary Therapists in Hospice and Palliative Care (NACTHPC)

2.  To comply with the requirements of Professional Code of Conduct and practice.

3.  To be aware of current developments in palliative care and implications on clinical practice.

4.  To ensure the welfare and safety of patients, carers, staff and volunteers within the Hospice.

5.  To adhere to both Peace Hospice Care and professional body policy guidelines at all times
