Analysis of Student Learning (ASL) in Physical Education: Fitnessgram (FG)
FG General Information
This section provides general details regarding the purpose of FG and appropriate and inappropriate uses of FG.
You may find these details helpful as you complete the ASL project.
FG Defined & Purpose
  • FG is a comprehensive battery of health-related fitness test items that are scored using criterion-referenced standards. The standards are age and gender specific and are based on how fit children need to be for good health.
  • The purpose of FG is to provide a comprehensive tool for students to diagnose, monitor and improve health-related fitness

Appropriate uses of FG
 Goal setting*
Fitness education as a process*
 Providing feedback to students and parents via FG reports
Helping students track fitness results over time*
 Documenting that fitness assessment is being administered
 Institutional testing for curriculum development
* NOTE: asterisks indicate uses of FG that were the focus of this particular assessment / Inappropriate uses of FG
 Using student scores to evaluate or grade students—either the raw score or as a percentage of improvement
 Posting students' individual FG scores (scores are considered personal and should not be made public)
 Student scores should not be used to evaluate teacher effectiveness
 Student scores should not be used as a sole measure to evaluate overall physical education quality

FG Data Collection Details
This section provides specific details regarding the data collection for the FG in this 8th grade PE volleyball unit.
You may find these details helpful as you complete the ASL project.
FG Recording Sheet Directions /Pre-test/
  • For each assessment in the FG battery pre-test, the teacher asked the students to do the following:
  • Enter all demographic data into recording sheet (e.g., age, gender, goal level, etc.)
  • Observe the instructor demonstrating the test
  • Practice performing the test as a partner observes and provides feedback on adherence to the test protocol
  • Perform the test to criteria for an official score
  • Record official score in the appropriate scoring box.
  • Determine if score falls in healthy fitness zone (HFZ)
  • Develop a personal fitness goal based on FG goal development guidelines
  • Refer to the example row to help you record scores accurately.
 Following the completion of the FG pre-test the teacher collected the FG recording sheets from each student.
FG Recording Sheet Directions /Post-test/
  • Prior to the FG post-test, the teacher handed back each student’s recording sheet from the FG pre-test.
  • For each assessment in the FG battery post-test, the teacher asked the students to do the following:
  • Update demographic data into recording sheet (e.g., age, gender, goal level, etc.) that may have changes since the pre-test
  • Determine if the pre-test personal goal was achieved.
  • Determine if there was improvement from the pre-test score
  • Refer to the example row to help you record scores accurately.

FG Evaluation Details
This section provides specific information regarding how the teacher evaluated each students FG recording sheet.
You may find these details helpful as you complete the ASL project.
FG Recording Sheet Evaluation Criteria
  • Students can earn a score from 0 – 100 on the FG Recording Sheet.
  • The recording sheet is used to evaluate students’ ability successfully record FG scores, accurately diagnose current levels of health, and develop goals appropriate for maintaining or improving health, and correctly determine achievement and improvement.
  • Students earn points for completing each of the following tasks to criteria:

FG Purpose & Alignments
This section provides specific information regarding the purpose, national and state alignments, and objectives associated with the FG.
FG Purpose
  • To provide each student with an opportunity to diagnose his/her current level of health-related fitness and develop goals for maintaining or improving health.
FG Standards Alignments
  • National Standards: NASPE
  • Standard 4: Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.
  • State Standards: NC Healthful Living Standard Course of Study
  • Competency Goal 9: The learner will show evidence of an acceptable level of health-related fitness and be familiar with factors that benefit performance
  • Grade Level Objective
  • Grade 8. Competency Goal 9. Objective 2. Complete a valid and reliable pre and post health-enhancing fitness assessment and show personal improvement toward achievement of fitness scores at an acceptable level, including monitoring of the heart.
  • FG Lesson Objective
  • As a result of engaging in the two FG lessons (pre and post), the student will demonstrate the ability to successfully record FG scores, accurately diagnose current levels of health, and develop goals appropriate for maintaining or improving health, and correctly determine achievement and improvement by scoring > 80 points on the FG recording sheet.
