Do’s and Don’ts for Dog Walking

PAWS staff has the responsibility for the health and well-being of the animals! Volunteers must follow any and all directions from the staff.

How to meet a dog:

  • Read the cage card to learn about the dog’s background/personality
  • Be calm and quiet
  • Don’t stare at the dog
  • Go down to the dog’s level (kneeling in front of a big dog’s run)
  • Turn to the side so that your shoulder faces the dog
  • Allow dog to sniff you (don’t place your hand inside the cage)

How to walk a dog:

  • Bring a 6-8 foot non-retractable leash with you
  • Ask a staff member if you have any questions about which dog to walk
  • Prepare the leash to loop around dog’s neck (insert leash through handle)
  • When looping leash around dog’s neck, be sure it is done so that leash hangs loosely over dog’s right shoulder (if done incorrectly, leash will tighten around dog’s neck and not release)
  • Small/medium dogs-D2 room:
  • Be sure no other dog is entering or exiting room
  • Open crate door enough to loop leash over dog’s neck
  • Loop leash over neck, shorten leash to have good control over dog
  • Exit through door carefully to be sure no other dog is nearby
  • Puppies:
  • Ask front desk staff if puppy can be walked outside
  • Big dogs-D1 room:
  • Be sure no other dog is entering or exiting room
  • Open door to run, blocking exit with your body. Enter run.
  • Close run door
  • Loop leash over dog’s neck, shorten leash to have good control over dog
  • Exit through doors carefully to be sure no other dog is nearby
  • Outside runs:
  • Use D1 room rules
  • If more than one dog is in a run, ask for help from staff or other volunteer
  • URGENT: Close all doors and gates behind you (including wooden gates outside)
  • Clean up after the dog
  • URGENT: Stay at least 6 feet away from other dogs
  • After walking the dog, check its name off on the board in D1 or D2

Miscellaneous

  • Be careful to limit dog’s activity before/after feeding to avoid health issue
  • Use treats sparingly – none for puppies
  • Report any health concerns (loose stool, limping, etc.) to front desk staff
  • Sign volunteer log book at the front desk before you leave
  • Make notes as appropriate in the dog behavior book at the front desk
