Highlights of the Regular Board Meeting
28 July 2004
School Board Offices
- The final meeting of the pilot South Shore District School Board was held at the school board office in Bridgewater. On August 1, the South Shore Regional School Board will succeed the pilot district school board, expanding the range of the Board’s jurisdiction, as follows:
- Under provincial legislation, the Southwest Regional School Board dissolves. This Board was the service provider to the South Shore and Tri-County District School Boards for finance, operations, human resources, and information technology;
- The South Shore Regional School Board maintains its responsibility for delivery of education (including the Public School Program) governance of public schools (including staff, students and School Advisory Councils) and employment (School Administration, Teachers and Program Support Assistants)
- The new Regional School Board acquires responsibility for additional employment (Board Staff, School Administrative Assistants, Librarians, Custodians, Computer Technicians and School Bus Drivers), for the provision of transportation services to students and for the operation and maintenance of public schools in the Region;
- Provincial legislation requires the South Shore and Tri-County Regional School Boards to share certain services. Governed by a management committee composed of the Superintendents and Board Chairs of each Regional School Board, the unit of shared services is responsible for providing to each Board with Finance, Human Resources and Information Technology services;
- At its July 28th meeting, the South Shore District School Board approved, for its part, the proposed shared services structure. This proposal is also subject to consideration by the Tri-County District School Board. Final approval awaits decisions by other partners;
- The South Shore Regional School Board, once established, will publicly announce staffing decisions respecting new positions;
- The Board received a presentation from the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU);
- The inaugural meeting of the South Shore Regional School Board will be held Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at school board offices, at 7:30 p.m. A budget meeting has also been scheduled for August 9th.
