Birdwatching Rally „Curonian Lagoon 2007“

On 19-21 of October, Lithuanian Ornithological Society is organizing the Birdwatching Rally "Curonian Lagoon 2007" on Baltic coast where due to rather mild climate most of late autumn migrants still could be recorded late October. It will be the eighth rally competition between the birdwatchers.
The Event will take place at Ventes Ragas Settlement, Silute district, at the local hotel "Ventainė". Registration of participants will start 19 of October, at 17.00 PM, opening ceremony will start at 19.00 PM.
We would be thankful if participants from other countriesmake a preliminary registration by e-mail dicating the names ofall the team members. The participationfee is 85 Lt (25 EUR) per person. The teams should take care of their travel expenses to and back from the competition area, insurance, accommodation, meals, car rental etc.

OTHER INFORMATION

The rally is an international, open, non-professional competition with a goal to record as many bird species as possible within the time and area indicated. Purpose of the rally is also to make Lithuanian bird watching sites better known in the neighbouring countries, increase interest to bird watching as hobby by showing of an international public passion and interest for it. Public awareness of nature conservation, bird and nature tourism and events of this type is also a goal of the rally.

Ventes Ragas Peninsula of the Curonian Lagoon as well as Curonian Spit are sites where due to specific land contours are key or bottle-neck areas of well known White-Baltic seas flyway. According to many foreign bird-watchers autumn bird migration on Lithuanian Baltic coast is among the most intensive in Europe.

The size of a team can be 2, 3 or more persons. No limitations to sex or age. Foreigners must inform about participation and participant names (to make a preliminary registration) by e-mail.

Competition area will be indicated on the maps given to competitors. It covers the area of Silute and Klaipeda regions only. Records made outside of this territory will not be taken in account in competition. The Jury can restrict some special areas out from competition.

Vehicles to be used are cars (boats not allowed), and driving of cars must be according to traffic regulations and other restrictions of Lithuania.

Private ownership rights to some territories must be taken in account by the teams. Organizers are not responsible of any damages or legal matters or consequences of competitors’ misbehaviour.

Each team must have only one car by time but temporary splitting of the team is allowed. Binoculars and scopes is the only equipment allowed for identifications. Caught, dead or tamed birds are not accepted. Use of mobile phones, human assistants from outside or unfair ways for getting records is forbidden.

Each team must visit the control post within appointed time.

Silute region has a near coastal climate. At the end of October humid weather can be expected.
