TOTAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY & PARTIAL KNEE ARTHROPLASTY

·  When will my stapes be removed?

At approximately 2 weeks from your surgical date. Typically they will be removed either at your inpatient rehab or in the office if you are home by the 2 week point. You will need to schedule the office visit if you are at home.

·  How long will I remain on Coumadin, Lovenox, or Aspirin (you will be on 1 of these anticoagulating medicines)?

Anticoagulant is prescribed for up to 6 weeks postoperatively. If you are on Coumadin your blood levels will need to be monitored by either the Coumadin Clinic headed by Louise Katzin, RN located at the Mount Kisco office of MKMG or by your Primary Care Physician.

·  Is swelling of my knee, leg, foot and ankle normal?

Yes, for 3 to 6 months. To decrease swelling, elevate your leg and apply ice for 20 minutes at a time (3-4 times a day).

·  Is it normal to feel numbness around the knee?

Yes, it is normal to feel numbness on the inside and outside of the knee.

·  What exercise should I perform at home?

Walking, isometrics, flexion and extension exercises.

·  How long will I need to use a cane?

This varies with each patient. Usually between 2-6 weeks.

·  May I go outdoors prior to my 6-week follow up appointment?

Yes, we encourage you to do so.

·  May I drive/ride in a car before my 6 week visit?

Yes, you may ride in a car however, you must be off all pain mediations prior to driving. It is a patient’s responsibility to determine his or her own safety.

·  Why is my leg bruised?

It is common to see bruising on the skin. It is from the normal accumulation of blood after your surgery.

·  What should my range of motion be by my first office visit?

You should be bending past 90 degrees by your first postop office visit.

·  What is the maximum range an artificial knee can achieve?

Usually approximately 130 degrees.
